Injury ends Cox Plate ambition for international visitor

The Willie Mullins-trained Riven Light cooled down with a career threatening injury after finishing seventh behind Gailo Chop in Saturday's Group I Ladbrokes Stakes over 2000m.

Mullins told the Irish Independent the six-year-old, a five-time winner on the flat and also a winner over hurdles, will require surgery.

"He's fractured an off-fore joint and it is a premature end to his Australian journey," Mullins said.

"I knew there was something wrong as when he was pulled out by the rider, he weakened quickly, having been holding his position easily.

"Perhaps he was feeling the ground.

"He was travelling very well and when he was pulled out, he seemed to get the injury. We'll see about his future - it is going to require screws, it is going to require an operation."

It was not a satisfactory race for jockey Glen Boss either, incurring a 10-day suspension for shifting out in the home straight and causing interference to Calderon and Hartnell.

The main goal for Riven Light in Australia was the Cox Plate.
