The Times are a Changing

Tara Madgwick - Thursday April 13

The Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale was interesting for many reasons, but for someone that has been working in bloodstock in this country for more than 20 years it delivered something I’ve not seen before.

And that was a pair of fillies topping the sale, which has never happened in the past 20 years and probably rarely beyond that, if at all.

$1.8million The Autumn Sun filly from Via Africa

Fillies by The Autumn Sun and Pierro topped the sale selling for $1.8million and $1.7million and if you had come out prior to the sale tipping that result, you’d have been politely told to get back in your box.

The only time a filly has topped Inglis Easter in the past  20 years was in 2012 when the Redoute’s Choice half-sister to Black Caviar from Helsinge topped the sale at $2.6million.

She was one of three yearlings from Helsinge to top the sale in consecutive years with All Too Hard (Casino Prince) topping it the year before in 2011 when selling for $1,025,000 and a Redoute’s Choice colt topping it the year after in 2013 for $5million, which remains the record for the most expensive yearling sold in Australia at auction. (For those who remember, he later died before he could be tested).

Given that fillies topped Inglis Easter this year, you might be entitled to ask, where were the top colts? And the answer to that would be Magic Millions.

$2.7million I Am Invincible colt from Anaheed

The highest priced yearling sold this year was the I Am Invincible colt from Anaheed that topped Magic Millions at $2.7million and he was one of four yearlings sold at the Gold Coast for $2million plus, while at Inglis Easter there were none this year.

Traditionally Inglis Easter has been the place to sell your absolute very best yearling and that is reflected in the history of the sale.

In the table below going back to 2003, only four times have Magic Millions sold the most expensive yearling of the year.

This year 2023, then 2020 when Inglis copped the brunt of the Covid fallout when forced to split the sale into two online versions which was hardly ideal. The other two occasions we have to go back to 2011 when MM sold the half-brother by Redoute’s Choice to current champion mare of the time More Joyous and 2009 when they sold the full brother to champion miler of the time Racing to Win.
