A colt by Written By rounded out the day as top seller as strong selling saw the 2023 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale declared the second best ever.
Offered as Lot 360, the day's top selling lot was the Written By colt from Sudden Wealth who sold for $220,000 to John Foote Bloodstock.
With John absent from the sale after completing inspections across the weekend his bloodstock representative Maree McEwan bid for the Kambula Stud offering.
The colt is the third foal of the five time winning and stakes performed Time Thief mare Sudden Wealth - a half sister to the dam of Melbourne Cup winner Vow and Declare.
"There were a lot of good judges on him," McEwan said. "That bodes well in that he ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people."
"He was a horse with good size and good substance, so we were happy to get him."
"We've bid on a number of horses and this is the only one we've got so far, so we're happy to be on the buyers sheet," she added.
Other big sellers today included a pair of Baramul Stud colts by Star Turn (Lot 248) and All Too Hard (Lot 263) who both sold for $170,000 to Jenna Mahoney and Nick Ryan Racing/JJ Gordon Bloodstock respectively.
Another Baramul bred and sold colt was next on the top sellers list - a youngster by in form sire Pride of Dubai (Lot 293) who sold to Mitch Freedman Racing for $160,000.
Macdonald Gluyas Racing was the leading buyer at the sale by gross with a spend of $490,000 - $300,000 of that coming with two $150,000 fillies purchased from Willow Grove Stud today.
Cornerstone Stud ($1,136,500) was leading vendor by gross, just shading Baramul Stud ($1,021,000), while Emirates Park ($100,000 for 4 sold) and The Chase ($93,286 for 7 sold) were the leading vendors by average (for 3 or more lots sold).
Across the two days of selling over $16.8 million was traded on 341 lots sold at an average price of $49,507 and strong clearance rate of over 82 per cent.
"Take last year's sale out of the equation, which was an unbelievable sale and up some $5 million on the year before, this is as good a sale as we’ve had in Adelaide," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.
"I am really pleased that the buyers accepted the catalogue like we saw it."
"The South Australians who leave their best horses here in the state have been very well rewarded and it's fantastic to see."
"Racing SA is doing its best to improve the Racing Rewards incentive scheme and to get Adelaide racing humming and we're going to support them as well."
"So, I am just pleased this has gone off really smoothly."
"I think the participation from a lot of buyers from Asia, Western Australia has been great and most areas we marketed the sale to have come and supported the sale."
"It's always a great trade market sale and I think you’ll see plenty of these horses at our 2YOs in Training Sale later in the year."
"Whether you're a vendor or a buyer, it is a fun place to come. Adelaide is fantastic, it has a good fun vibe about it."
"It's an easy sale to work and anyone who comes here, comes back and anyone who hasn’t been should be coming to Adelaide."
The thoroughbred sales focus now immediately switches north to Queensland for the 2023 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale which will be held on Monday and Tuesday.
"This is a sale which will present incredible opportunities for buyers with amazing incentives and a first class catalogue of yearlings to go under the hammer."
"Queensland bred horses have always punched above their weight and the QTIS scheme provides incredible bonuses across all levels of the industry," Bowditch added.
