Four Time G1 Winner Montefilia Confirmed for Inglis Chairman's Sale

Media Release - Thursday March 2

Montefilia – the most successful horse in terms of G1 wins of the 2017 Australian foal crop - is the latest star attraction confirmed for the Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

With four G1 wins to her name already, Montefilia is the most accomplished mare confirmed for public auction in 2023.

During an extraordinary racetrack career to date, her wins at the top level in the Flight Stakes, Spring Champion Stakes, Metropolitan Hcp and Ranvet Stakes saw her international rating peak at 115, ranking her amongst the top 30 fillies and mares in the world on turf in 2022.

In what is a significant opportunity for prospective buyers, Montefilia is being offered as a racing and breeding prospect at the Chairman’s Sale, so people will be purchasing a live Caulfield/Melbourne Cup contender as well as other staying G1 races around Australia, and then a magnificent broodmare prospect too.

Montefilia proved last year she was a genuine Cups contender, finishing an extremely unlucky fourth in the Caulfield Cup.

On that occasion she ran the fastest last 200m of the day, with faster finishing splits than Group class sprinters such as Asfoora, Chain of Lightning, Kissonallforcheeks, Argentia etc.

Her extraordinary finishing burst was also evident in her Flight Stakes win as a 3YO when she ran a faster last 200m than top class sprinters including Nature Strip, Classique Legend, Fasika, Standout etc on the same day.

Montefilia has consistently been one of the leading mares in training over the past three years.

She has won at G1 level across three consecutive seasons, including a dominant win over 11-time G1 winner Verry Elleegant in last year’s Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

And with a slashing first-up fifth behind Anamoe in Saturday’s G1 Chipping Norton Stakes – beaten just 2.1L – it’s suggestive of another successful preparation for the David Payne-trained 5YO.

In terms of fillies and mares since 2018 in Australia, only Winx and Verry Elleegant have won more G1s than Montefilia - she has won more than the likes of Sunlight, Forbidden Love, Arcadia Queen, Duais, Loving Gaby, Nettoyer etc.

Montefilia joins a tantalising Chairman’s catalogue that already includes fellow G1 winners such as Icebath, Nimalee, Graceful Girl, G1 producer Celebrity Miss, three-time G1 placed mare Swats That plus mares in foal to the likes of American sire sensation Gun Runner and Champion European sire Frankel, as well as the likes of Extreme Choice, Home Affairs, Stay Inside etc.

Inglis’ CEO Sebastian Hutch said the Inglis team is “honoured” to have the opportunity to sell a mare as accomplished as Montefilia.

“She is a fantastic race mare who has been beautifully managed by David Payne and his team,’’ Hutch said.

“It’s hugely exciting to consider what she might yet achieve as a racehorse but beyond that, she has outstanding credentials as a broodmare, with the second generation of her pedigree bringing together Galileo, Sunday Silence, Monsun and Last Tycoon.

“The term ‘world-class’ is one that we get to use infrequently, but I think Montefilia deserves to be categorised as a world-class racehorse and world-class breeding prospect.’’

Places in the 2023 Chairman’s Sale are again limited, so interested parties are encouraged to contact a member of the Inglis Bloodstock team to discuss your options.

Entries for the sale will close next Friday, March 10.
