Timing is Everything

When respected studmaster Peter O’Brien selected his yearlings to present in Victoria for Segenhoe Stud at Inglis Premier this year, he knew the draft would feature one yearling with a Group I connection, but results from Randwick last Saturday have now given him two.

Segenhoe Stud will offer a draft of 16 and the clear standout on pedigree comes early in the sale with Lot 6, the second foal of Group I ATC Flight Stakes winner Oohood, a half-sister to the dam of the famous Segenhoe bred and sold multiple Group I winning juvenile, King’s Legacy.

Lot 6

A son of Redoute’s Choice, King’s Legacy made $1.4million when purchased by James Harron Bloodstock as a yearling and this colt is by another legendary champion sire in Fastnet Rock.

This is a family that just keeps getting better with Oohood a three-quarter sister-in-blood to this season’s Group placed filly Blanc de Blanc, who was second to Golden Slipper favourite Learning to Fly in the $2million Inglis Millennium.

The second youngster that has emerged with a Group I connection is Lot 250, a stylish chestnut colt from the first crop of Dubious out of rising star producer Zenaida.

Lot 250

He is a half-brother to last Saturday’s Group I ATC Surround Stakes winner Sunshine in Paris, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise this year with a close second in the Group II ATC Light Fingers Stakes preceding her first G1 victory.

This colt is the fourth foal of well related Zabeel mare Zenaida, whose previous three foals are all winners with her first foal Macroura a Group III winner of over $300,000 in prizemoney.

Sunshine in Paris is from the first crop of Snitzel’s Group I winning son Invader, while Macroura is by Snitzel, so this colt is bred along similar lines being by Dubious, another fast precocious sprinter from the Redoute’s Choice sireline.

He was pinhooked as a weanling by one of the best judges in the business in James Bester and has progressed in just the way you would anticipate.

Another yearling that has had a timely pedigree update is Lot 112, a lovely filly by Brazen Beau from Segenhoe Valley, whose two year-old filly Shesallshenanigans (Toronado (IRE) opened her account with a terrific win at Bendigo on Tuesday, read about her here.

Lot 112

A strong racy type, very typical of her sire, she is also a half-sister to Flemington stakes-winner Shelby Cobra from a prolific Black Type family.

The Segenhoe brand is revered by blue chip investors with their sales drafts producing 17% stakes performers that include current season Group I winners In Secret and Ellsberg along with stakes-horses such as Holyfield, Juan Diva, Starry Legend, Poland, Shalailed, Millane and progressive mare I Am Me.

Stakes-winning I Am Invincible mare I Am Me was bought for $210,000 from Segenhoe Stud's Inglis Premier draft in 2020.

A $210,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Segenhoe for Dynamic Syndications, I Am Me has won seven of 13 starts earning over $464,000 and as a stakes-winning daughter of I Am Invincible is going to be worth a pretty penny for her big ownership group when her racing days are done.
