Second winner for Written By as Sunday Mail Goes Coast to Coast at Ipswich

Mark Smith - Wednesday January 18

Backed as if unbeatable at his career debut at Eagle Farm on October 8, Sunday Mail deflated his supporters when trailing home last of the eight starters.

It cost the son of Written By a trip to the vets to be gelded.

Trained by Lee Freedman, Sunday Mail resumed over 800m at Ipswich on Wednesday. Punters are a forgiving lot, and Sunday Mail again went off an odd-on favourite. It was a happier result for his large group of owners.

Boris Thornton led at every call on the striking chestnut to defeat the Kobayashi filly Mishani Metallic by a (long-looking) length, with the Rothesay filly Mishani Ambitious one and a half lengths back in third.

The My Racehorse colour-bearer was a $150,000 purchase for his trainer from the Widden Stud draft at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the third winner from four to race out of the stakes-placed Exceed And Excel mare Sunday Rose.

Sunday Mail a $150,000 Magic Millions yearling

A half-sister to Group II-placed Divine Moon (God's Own), and dual Group III-placed Moonboat (Encosta de Lago), Sunday Rose hails from the family of Canny Lad and Canny Lass.

Sunday Rose has a yearling brother to Sunday Mail. She missed to Russian Camelot (IRE) in 2021 and was covered by Portland Sky in September.

Sunday Mail is the second winner for Widden Stud’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Written By after the Group III BRC BJ McLachlan Stakes winner The Novelist, while Gangitano finished third in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes at Caulfield.
