Geese That Lay Golden Eggs – What’s in the Future?

Tara Madgwick - Sunday January 15

The 2023 Magic Millions Yearling Sale was highlighted by 20 yearlings that sold for $1million or more which was up by one on last year when 19 were in the millionaires club and just one mare was able to do the double and go back to back.

$1.1million Exceed and Excel filly from Sweet Sherry bought by Kia Ora / TFI.

The mare was Bel Esprit’s Group II winning daughter Sweet Sherry, whose first two living foals were both sold by Silverdale Farm with her Snitzel filly selling for $1.35million last year and her Exceed and Excel filly making $1.1million this year.

There will certainly be plenty of interest in her third foal and he’s a colt by I Am Invincible, so we can expect she’ll have a great shot to make it three million dollar yearlings in a row next year!

Sweet Sherry was a good looking yearling having been the top priced Bel Esprit sold in 2015 when she made $260,000 at Inglis Premier and was purchased by Cloud 9 Thoroughbreds. She won the Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial on debut and won a further two more stakes races including the Group II SAJC Euclase Stakes.

Below we’ve tabled all the million dollar yearlings with the foal produced last year by their dam and subsequent covering.

Those that were covered all went to top end sires last spring with the exception of the Emirates Park owned duo of Mosssfun and her daughter Tumooh, who both went to young Brazen Beau stallion Tassort in his third season , a Darley bred sire they stand in conjunction with Newgate Farm.

Tassort stands at a fee of $11,000 and had his first yearlings sell at this sale for up to $160,000.
