There are many ways of judging the performance of sires as compared to their peers and in the case of our third season sires the winner to runner strike rate is well worth a look.
On the score of earnings, Maurice (Jpn) (Arrowfield) and Astern (Darley) are out in front with $4million banked by their offspring this season and by winners it’s Capitalist (Newgate) out in front by a big margin with 56 winners on the board from his vast tally of 160 runners.
A look at the winners to runners strike rate puts the spotlight on Star Turn (Vinery), who sired his second stakes-winner this season last Saturday when Saltaire won the $500,000 Inglis Nursery.
Star Turn is batting at a seasonal winner to runner strike rate of 48.2% which is pretty impressive with his 41 winners collecting 55 wins from 85 starters, which is about half the number of runners as Capitalist.
His strike rate is also well ahead of champion sire I Am Invincible, whose seasonal winner to runner rate is 38%.
Star Turn got his first Group I winner at the back end of last season when Startantes won the Group I Tatts Tiara and had a fee increase for this year to stand at $27,500 up from $16,500 in his previous two years when he covered 167 mares and then 176 mares.
With much smaller numbers, Stratum Star (Widden) and Under the Louvre (Grandview) have been chipping away and getting their share of winners to sit high on the table below featuring active stallions in Australia this spring.
