The Japanese struck first on Hong Kong International Day at Sha Tin when Win Marilyn (JPN) stormed home under Damian Lane in the Group 1 The Longines Hong Kong Vase (2400m).
There was a sensation at the start when the German representative Mendocino (GER) was stuck in the stalls and took no part in the race.

Coming off a second in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Cup, Win Marilyn was winning at the elite level for the first time and has been winless in four starts this season.
“It’s very special to win a Group 1 in Hong Kong; I’ve been here on numerous occasions and have not been able to break through,” Lane said.
‘It’s a great relief, and to do it with the Japanese is very special.
“She is the ultimate professional. She jumps well and travels sweetly. You can ride her wherever you want. When the pace was on I was happy to take a sit
“I knew from the turn of the foot she showed at her last run that she would be suited at this trip today.
“I love it there (Japan), and I have a great association with the trainer.”
Win Marilyn advances her record to six wins, two seconds and a third from 17 starts.
