The Flemington carnival ended with a flourish on Saturday, so let’s take a look at pedigrees for the five G1 winners since last week, two Aussie breds, a Kiwi and two imports, plus the winner of the $1million Golden Gift, who will be the first horse qualified for next year’s Golden Slipper.
The Group I VRC Melbourne Cup (3200m) was won by the top weight Gold Trip (FR), a horse not obviously bred to run two miles being a grand-son of champion Australian speed sire Exceed and Excel, read about him here.
He is the first G1 winner among 10 stakes-winners sired by Outstrip and the seventh G1 winner for his broodmare sire Dubai Destination, who we have highlighted before. His achievements as a broodmare sire are quite impressive, sire of the dam of 50 SW’s.
The Group I VRC Oaks (2500m) was won by She’s Extreme, giving her sire Extreme Choice his first classic winner, read about her here.
Already a G1 winner last season at two, She’s Extreme showed some real class and versatility with this win and if Extreme Choice can sire more like here he’s certainly worth the fee set for him. His updated stats given his limited fertility are 34 winners from 53 starters and eight stakes-winners at 15.1% SW to runner.
She is one of only two stakes-winners for So Secret as a broodmare sire.
The Group I VRC Champion Sprint (1200m) was won by Roch ‘n Horse (NZ),now a two time G1 winner in Australia up the straight, read about her here.
The Group I VRC Champions Mile (1600m) was won by Alligator Blood claiming his second G1 win of the spring and fourth overall, read about him here.
The Group I VRC Champions Stakes (2000m) was won by multiple G1 winner Zaaki (GB), read about him here.
The $1million ATC Golden Gift (1100m) was won by Godolphin colt Barber, read about him here.
It’s not a stakes race, but the prizemoney is the biggest for spring 2YO’s and will ensure Barber easy access to whatever autumn challenges he is set.
He’s bred on a productive nick between Exceed and Excel and Lonhro mares with 32 winners from 44 starters, 72.7% and five of them stakes-winners although the best are G3 level and include Barber’s sister Manicure.
The Group I NZ 2000 Guineas was also run with Proisir gelding Pier taking the prize, read about him here.
Pier is the third G1 winner for Proisir and is the first for Darci Brahma as a broodmare sire.
