$500,000 Toronado colt Tops Magic Millions 2YO's in Training

A colt by Toronado topped the day's proceedings as figures rose across the board at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training Sale today.

$500,000 sale-topping colt by Toronado (IRE).
Hong Kong based buyer Vicky Tang, bidding online, went to $500,000 to secure the well presented youngster from the A List Stud draft.

Catalogued as Lot 24, the bay colt is a half brother to the group performer Don'ttelltheboss and two other winners from the Haradasun mare Canterbury Hill.

"It was a very big day for the company," A List's trainer Allan Chau reported. "We brought 16 horses here and we were able to sell 12 of them, so it was very good for us and good for the clients."

"The Toronado colt, who sold for the top price today - it was very good to bring the horse here, to be able to top the sale and that stamps the mark that we did a good job."

"A List has invested a lot of money into this industry for the last three years since Chris established to try and cement himself in racing. That's the concept that he wants to bring to the sales, for people to come here to the Magic Millions breeze ups and buy quality horses."

"We’ve prepped them to be quality, ready-made racehorses."

A List Stud also provided the top selling filly of the day - their I Am Invincible-Defy the Odds filly selling to Constance Cheng's Thoroughbred Owners Association & Sports Trust in Singapore for $480,000.
$480,000 I Am Invincible filly from Defy the Odds

The filly is a half sister to Group One SA Derby winner Leicester as well as the recent stakes placed performer Stroke of Luck.

"I was very, very lucky," Chau said of the I Am Invincible filly. "She was sold for $480,000 to Constance Cheng and she is very happy for me to keep the filly in training here at the Gold Coast, so that's another bonus for me because I believe she is a very, very nice filly."

Leading Hong Kong based trainer Manfred Man went to $340,000 to secure the Starspangledbanner colt from Mutate from the draft of KBL Thoroughbreds as Lot 97.

Another A List Stud offering, their Pride of Dubai-Marishka filly (Lot 86), was snapped up by the Laguna Partnership for $260,000.

A List Stud rounded out the sale as leading vendor by both gross ($1,792,000) and average ($149,333).

All up across the day over $6.7 million was traded on 80 lots sold at an average price of $83,963 and improving clearance rate of 75 per cent.

"It's hard not to be pleased with today's results," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "There was a good vibe on the ground."

"It was great to have a lot of our international guests back here on the Gold Coast enjoying the Magic Millions hospitality and having a good time and obviously supporting the sale. Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines were all very, very strong."

"All in all, vendors that had quality horses here who were willing to meet the market did very, very well. In a lot of cases they exceeded their expectations by a long way."

"Type is key. Type and breeze-up is what sells well here. The vendors who went to the yearling sales with a discerning eye and spent their money wisely have come to this sale and done extremely well."

"What disappoints me that there were plenty of buyers who came to the sale, be they internationally or locally, have probably gone away empty handed or with not as many horses as they would have liked."

"I hope we can grow our vendor base and increase how many horses each of them bring to the sale next year because today's market proved that this is the right place to be selling these horses and we could do with plenty more here in the sale."

"Every number is up. We sold more horses above $200,000 than we did last year, we sold more horses over $100,000, the average was up, the clearance was better, the gross is up and it's off a smaller catalogue, so they're all the numbers that should give vendors confidence that this is a really viable component to our industry and that you can sell a horse really well here at the Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale."

"We'd like to thank everyone who played a part. Obviously many facets go into the sale from vendors, the people who prepared the horses for the breeze ups, the staff and our team to make this a seamless process - thanks to everyone who was involved."
