Deep Field Filly Wins G3 Thoroughbred Club

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 8

Deep Field filly English Riviera has always promised to win a stakes race and got the job done at Caulfield on Saturday when scoring a tenacious victory in the Group III MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) carrying the Seymour Bloodstock colours

Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, English Riviera had been Group placed twice previously and looked sure to win with a furlong to run, but was challenged hard in the final stages by I am Invincible filly Mumbai Jewel.

Blake Shinn got everything out of English Riviera, who hung on for a short half head win, her second from seven starts with prizemoney just shy of $250,000.

“She's a really good quality filly and not much was going right for her, so to win this stakes race today was so pleasing and rewarding for me and my team,” said Tony McEvoy, who will look for more Black Type for the talented filly.

"There's the William Crockett Stakes at The Valley, there's the Coolmore (G1)at Flemington. She goes well down the straight. I've had a bit of luck with fillies in the Coolmore so I'll talking to the ownership group - that was a big tick today."

English Riviera was a $260,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Mark Pilkington Bloodstock.

Bred by Alan Bell, English Riviera was a $260,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Vinery Stud draft for Mark Pilkington Bloodstock and runs for a partnership headed by Seymour Bloodstock in whose colours she runs.

She is the best of three winners from stakes-winning Any Suggestion mare Second Time Lucky and is the 18th stakes-winner for Newgate Farm’s Deep Field, who stands at a fee of $88,000 this spring.
