Shamus Award's Noname Lane Claims Seymour Cup

Mark Smith - Sunday October 2

Fresh off a win in the Listed Balaklava Cup, the Shamus Award gelding Noname Lane held off the local hopes Just Folk and Hi Stranger in the $200,000 Listed Seymour Cup (1600m) at Bendigo on Sunday.

Another front-running masterpiece by Linda Meech, the Will Clarken-trained gelding made it five wins from his last six starts in defeating the brave topweight Just Folk (Magnus) by a half-length with Hi Stranger (Zoffany) a half-head back in third.

With his second stakes success, Noname Lane advances his record to nine wins, five seconds, and two thirds from 22 starts, with earnings of $420,025.

“Every time they came at me, he gave a kick, and they were out on their feet chasing him,” Meech said.

“I kept it simple, sat there and let him do his thing.

“Will has done a fantastic job with the horse. He came here in terrific order. He was fresh and well and has had a lot of racing, so it’s a credit to Will.

“I can’t see why they couldn’t pick off a nice race at Flemington during Cup week because that was a quality field he put away easily.”

Bred by Golden Grove Stud Farm and owned by Vic Oldfield’s G & C Pastoral Co Pty Ltd, Noname Lane is a brother to Sovereign Award, whose nine wins are headlined by the Group III VRC Matron Stakes, Group III MRC Ladies Day Vase, and Group III MVRC Tesio Stakes.

They are two of the four winners from five to race out of the winning Show A Heart mare Sovereign Charm, which sold in 2019 for just $1,750 when carrying the unraced Shamus Award gelding Delcredere.

Sovereign Charm has a yearling colt by Barbados and was among the 2016 mares covered by Rosemont Stud’s Shamus Award last season.

Blue Light Enhances Breeding Success
For successful breeding outcomes, timing is everything. The horse’s natural reproductive period coincides with the light-filled days of summer. As seasonal breeders, the naturally lengthening days of spring suppress melatonin and in turn stimulate reproductive hormones that maximise fertility for both mares and stallions.
