Spring Potential Trial Watch

Tara Madgwick - Monday August 29

Gary Portelli is full of optimism for his star three year-olds Fireburn and Sejardan, who both trialled on Monday morning at Warwick Farm, while a Menari filly caught our eye as a likely winner next month.

The fog was so heavy when Sejardan trialled it’s hardly worth showing, but he did win his 787m heat by a neck over stakes-winners Bacchanalia and Big Parade and will be ready to resume in the Group II ATC Run to the Rose (1200m) on Saturday week where he will meet stablemate Fireburn.

She went around in the following heat finishing midfield under a hold with Brenton Avdulla sitting quietly.

It was her second trial and the daughter of Rebel Dane will be fit and ready to fire first up. Her sire also looked fit and sharp at the Widden Stud stallion parade last Friday having relocated from Victoria to capitalise on her overwhelming success last season.

Rebel Dane was much admired at Widden Stud.

Rebel Dane stands at a fee of $27,500.

Interesting heat winner was Menari filly Enzina, who showed good promise in her first campaign  when trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and is now with the Maher Eustace team.

She trialled twice in Sydney before making her debut at the Sunshine Coast last December in a bid to secure a Magic Millions 2YO Classic start and finished sixth.

Spelled after, she was having her second trial for her new trainers and looked to win in good style with ears pricked.

Enzina was the most expensive yearling from the first crop of Menari, bought from the Newgate draft for $260,000 at Magic Millions by James Bester Bloodstock/Vantage Thoroughbreds. She is a half-sister to smart winner Mohawk Brave from brilliant US Group winner Ben’s Duchess (USA).

Enzina was bred and sold by Newgate.
