Tara Madgwick - Sunday August 28

It’s been a big weekend for Newgate Farm’s Deep Field with Sweet Ride blowing away the big guns in the Group III ATC San Domenico Stakes while his three winners on Sunday included an impressive debut winner from the Peter Moody stable.

Desert Star was ridden by Luke Nolen and sent out a short priced favourite for the 1117m maiden at Moe on Sunday.

He lived up to expectation when coasting home to win by three lengths on a heavy 9.

“That’s a nice way to start what should be a long and successful career,” said Luke Nolen, who was well pleased with the win although keen to see Desert Star on better ground.

“On a better deck, he’d give an even better kick.”

A homebred for 21st Century Racing, Desert star is the first foal for imported Khelyef mare Ki Ki (GB).

The reigning champion sire in Hong Kong, Deep Field stands this spring at a fee of $88,000.
