No Catching Snapdancer in Memsie Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday August 27

Brad Spicer has indeed struck gold with Choisir. After Starspangledbanner carried the yellow and blue Spicer Thoroughbred colours with distinction, Choisir's 6yo daughter Snapdancer earned a second win at the highest level when demolishing a star-studded field in Saturday's $1,000,000 Magic Millions Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

Ridden by Ethan Brown for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Snapdancer led at every call to defeat the fast-finishing I'm Thunderstruck (Shocking) by a half-length with Cascadian (GB) (New Approach) a further length and half back in third.

The Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes winner at Morphettville in July, Snapdancer closed out last season with a second to Startantes in the Group 1 Tatt's Tiara at Eagle Farm.

The daughter of Choisir advances her record to seven wins, five seconds, and two thirds from 20 starts, with earnings of $2,020,570.

t;She ran so well at the 1400m in the Tiara, and as history would tell you, fitness counts for a lot in this race," Maher said.

"Her work here on Tuesday was super, and all the team have done a fantastic job. This horse has basically been in work since October last year.

"Ethan Brown, is a great lad to have around the stable and provides a lot of feedback. This is just fantastic for him.

"Brad Spicer seems to keep finding them. She has a great group of owners, and she's got a lot of options now.

"Maybe the Everest is an option for her, but she seems to be really dominant at that 1400m. She has a high cruising speed.

"If she did nothing else this preparation, this year has been phenomenal for her. She is just going from strength to strength, and I think she'll get better again.

"I always thought she would be better at four and five, and I think she is still developing, so the sky is the limit."

Brown rode Snapdacer in the Robert Sangster Stakes and said the mare is foolproof.

"She is taking me on the ride of my life," he said.

"She’s so easy to ride. I came out so relaxed for this race, she was obviously a live chance, but just her racing style makes it so much easier.

“She jumped so well, established a lead and switched off when I asked her to. Tactically I just wanted to use her residual fitness, knowing that most of those horses were first-up resuming stayers.

“She still had to do it and she done exactly that. I thought she was really impressive, she just keeps raising the bar.”

“She had to do it today, I wasn’t sure if she was quite up to it, but her work leading in has been amazing. The team has done a good job, she was placed to perfection today, and she just keeps raising the bar. It’s onwards and upwards for her.”

She is a three-quarter-sister to the dual Group III placed Drago (Danehill Dancer), who was fourth in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes.

Snapdancer’s dam Snapdragon (IRE) was sold to The Mission Syndicate for $60,000 at the 2018 National Broodmare Sale.

The daughter of Galileo (IRE) died in 2020. Her final foal is a 3yo filly by The Mission.
