Godolphin's highly regarded Lonhro filly Sumatra opened her winning account over 1300m at Hawkesbury on Thursday to become the second winner for Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes heroine Earthquake.
Ridden by Sam Clipperton for James Cummings, Sumatra enjoyed the run of the race and was untroubled to defeat the 3yo Rubick colt Glint Of Silver by a length with the 3yo Iffraaj colt Peace Officer a short-half-head back in third.
After finishing second at Moonee Valley when on debut in January, Sumatra was unplaced in the Group II Blue Diamond Prelude, a maiden at Ballarat, and the Group II VRC Sires' Produce Stakes.
The daughter of Lonhro was far from disgraced in her Group II assignments. She was primed for her seasonal debut with barrier trials at Randwick and Hawkesbury.
Stable representative Darren Beadman said the royally bred filly has a bright future after breaking through following a 22-week break.
"It was a lovely win. It was a great decision to take the blinkers off for the first time," Beadman said.
"She was a little keen but had the perfect run from a nice gate. She chimed in at the right time, and I think she is in for a good prep.
"She has a little bit of an attitude, which shows the determination is there; when push comes to shove, they know how to do it."
Sumatra is the fourth foal and second winner from as many to race out of Group 1 MRC Blue Diamond Stakes Earthquake, who was second to Mossfun in the Group 1 Golden Slipper.
Earthquake's first foal, an unraced sister to Sumatra named Seismics, has a yearling filly by Brazen Beau and visited Frosted (USA) last spring.
Earthquake has a 2yo I Am Invincible filly named Shaken and a yearling filly by Too Darn Hot (GB). The Group 1 winning daughter of Exceed And Excel was covered by Frosted (USA) last spring.
Later in the day, Godolphin struck again with the 3yo Exceed And Excel colt Renosu.
Also ridden by Sam Clipperton, Renosu showed his appreciation of a good track in defeating the 3yo Sooboog gelding Time To Boogie by a length with the 4yo Brazen Beau gelding Boston City a further length back in third.
Renosu took seven starts to break his maiden after placing in the Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield and Group III Maribyrnong Stakes at his first two starts.
Renosu is the first foal of Lonhro's Group II Surround Stakes winner Ghisoni whose dam Portillo also won the Group II Surround Stakes in addition to the Group II Magic Night Stakes.
Ghisoni has a yearling brother to Renosu named Restonica and a yearling colt by I Am Invincible. Ghisoni was covered by Bivouac last spring.
