The Group I Sussex Stakes (1m) was the overnight highlight at Goodwood and produced the ninth straight win for Baaeed, the highest rated racehorse in the world.
A homebred for Shadwell trained by William Haggas, the four year-old Sea the Stars stallion was a hot favourite and had little trouble forging clear of Godolphin’s French 2000 Guineas winner Modern Games to win by nearly two lengths with last start Group I July Cup winner Alcohol Free in third place.
“Baaeed just does what he has to like his sire (Sea The Stars) did. Just before the winning line he flicked his ears and completely shut down with me,” said winning rider Jim Crowley.
“It's a pleasure to be part of the journey. He's never going to be exuberant and win by ten lengths but the feeling I got from him between the three and the two (furlongs), no horse can give you that sort of feel. He's got everything. Good horses like that tick all the boxes. It will be really interesting when he goes a mile and a quarter next time and I'm really looking forward to it.”
Baaeed has only ever raced at the distance of one mile with all of his nine starts successful at the trip, but as a full brother to this year’s Group I Epsom Coronation Cup winner Hukum you would think longer trips should not be an issue.
He is the best of three winners from stakes-winning Kingmambo mare Aghareed, who was successful at 2000m and her dam Lahudood, was a Group I winner up to 2200m.
His female family traces in tail female line to Shadwell blue hen Height of Fashion, the dam of Shadwell champion Nashwan, winner of the Epsom Derby in 1989.
The Group III Molecomb (5f) Stakes for the 2YO’s produced the 40th stakes-winner for No Nay Never with the Richard Hannon trained filly Trillium score a length and a quarter win over the favourite Rocket Rodney (Dandy Man).
A homebred for Rockliffe Stud, she has two wins and a second from three starts.
Trillium is a half-sister to Mohawk King and it the best of three winners from Group III placed Invincible Spirit mare Marsh Hawk.
Rockliffe Stud will offer the yearling half-brother by Iffraaj to Trillium at the upcoming Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale in the Highclere Stud draft as Lot 113.
The Group III Oak Tree Stakes (7f) for fillies and mares was won by super consistent Galileo Gold filly Oscula, who started favourite.
Trained by George Boughey and ridden by William Buick, Oscula looked likely to run second, but gave it everything she had at the finish to win by a head.
Oscula was bought for just 4,000 guineas as a yearling at Tattersalls October Book 4 and has proven an absolute gem winning five races and placing nine times from 17 starts with this victory her third Black Type success.
She is the first winner for Bisous Y Besos, whose dam is a half-sister to stakes-winners Galeota and Loulwa from the family of Group I winners Burnt Sugar, Brown Sugar and Wings of War.
Oscula is one of four stakes-winners from the first crop of Galileo Gold, a dual Group I winner by Paco Boy that stands at Tally Ho Stud at a fee of €7,000.
