Randwick jockeys’ review for Epsom Handicap Day

Breednet - Saturday September 30

It was a huge day of racing at Randwick on Saturday and both Happy Clapper and jockey Michael Dee tasted Group I success for the first time.

Michael Dee returns a winner aboard Foundry after the Group I Metropolitan.

Once again, Racenet was on hand to get the feedback from every rider after every race.

This is what the jockeys thought of their rides during the day.

PERFORMER

Hugh Bowman

He was very good. I expected a good run from him and it’s no surprise that he won, in fact I thought he would. I’m pleased he delivered on my expectations.

2nd

BONDI

Blake Shinn

Great run. It was nearly as good as a win. He did everything right and ran as good as he could, the winner was just a bit better.

3rd

SANTOS

Adam Hyeronimus

He’s a very nice horse. Throughout the run he only did what he had to do but he’s very raw and a very nice horse.

4th

SPIN

Tim Clark

He ran well. I was hoping to be a little bit closer. It probably cost him running a place.

5th

OSORNO

Brenton Avdulla

Nice colt. He jumped well so I put him behind the speed. He just lost his way when Hughie went on the winner. He finished his gallop right off.

6th

HIEMAL

Kerrin McEvoy

He’s just gone the wrong way since the trial, he over-raced today and there was nothing left to go home with.

7th

OUTRAGEOUS

Dwayne Dunn

He ran well. He’s going to be a nice three-year-old.

8th

ROYAL CAPTAIN

Damian Lane

I thought he ran ok. We had to go a long way back from the draw and they were bit sharp for him. Up in trip he’ll be better.

9th

INVINCIBLE LAD

Tye Angland

He began very quick, he probably did a little bit too much work up front and just got tired late.

10th

SOKUDO

Glyn Schofield

He’ll be a nice horse later on.

11th

QUACKERJACK

Tommy Berry

He’s a nice type of a horse but he’s all legs at the moment. He just needs a bit of time to mature.

Nice filly.

2nd

SETSUNA

Brenton Avdulla

She ran terrific. I thought he trial was only plain but she ran well.

3rd

FIESTA

Joao Moreira

Lovely run, she was just too green. She didn’t know what racing was about.

4th

NOW OR NEVER

Tim Clark

She’s going to be suited once she gets out over a bit further but she’s a nice filly.

5th

GALINA

Kerrin McEvoy

Didn’t get a lot of room until late and she finished off very well. She’s got scope to run better next time.

6th

MERYL

Jay Ford

I thought she ran well. She showed good natural speed.

7th

IMPETUOSO

Blake Shinn

Great run just never got room until probably the 150m and hit the line well. She’s one to look out for.

8th

WITHERSPOON

Christian Reith

Just caught wide.

9th

CORTESTA

Tye Angland

Really good run. Terrible gate, got back and made good ground the middle stages. Got a little bit tired late.

10th

BOLD ARIAL

Adam Hyeronimus

No luck up the running.

Good run in transit just didn’t finish off.

I STOLE YOUR LOVE

Corey Brown

She’ll be alright later on. She jumped well and travelled ok but she lost the bridle a long way out. She stuck on ok. Seven furlongs next time in should be good.

14th

CAP GRIS NEZ

Glyn Schofield

Quick to begin but not enough speed to cross and weakened late.

Great win, he’ll definitely get further.

DISSOLUTION

Tommy Berry

We had a beautiful run in the race, just got off the fence at the right time. Beaten by a better horse today but it was good to see him live up to his ability.

3rd

SAMBRO

Joao Moreira

Lovely run. He was a bit keen during the race and it probably cost him the win.

4th

TANGLED

Hugh Bowman

It was a much better performance, he settled better today and finished off well.

5th

LANGLEY

Brenton Avdulla

I thought he ran well. From the draw we just had to keep going back. If we drew a gate he probably rides the speed and finishes in the top three.

6th

CHOSEN ASSASSIN

Tim Clark

Just overraced a little in the lead and ran into the headwind. It just took away his finish.

7th

PRIDE OF DARCI (NZ)

Corey Brown

He’s quite immature. He’s done well this time in. It’s his first preparation but if he goes for a spell he’s going to come back a much better horse.

8th

SEABABE

Glen Boss

She’s going to improve with racing. She’s a real mile and quarter filly. I suggested taking her to Melbourne, it might season her for next autumn.

9th

SPENCER

Michael Dee

Suspect at the mile. I recommended dropping him back in distance.

10th

ALL TOO HUIYING

Dwayne Dunn

Disappointing. I expected him to finish off better than what he did. He just didn’t find the line like what we thought he would.

11th

DUNATUN

Jay Ford

He had a hard run, pulled hard and was outclassed.

CLASSIC UNIFORM

Michael Walker

I take my hat off to Gary [Moore], he gave me the instructions to make it a true staying test. I jumped out and nothing took the lead so it didn’t worry me that I went slower than Gary wanted.

From the 800m I’d just let him creep away without actually pushing the horse.

He gave me a really good kick and he was very tough. I could feel Embley coming and I could hear it coming and my horse did the same, because every time he heard it, he found a little bit more. It was a really good effort.

2nd

EMBLEY

Jason Collett

Good run. Felt like we were going to get there at the furlong but he was pretty tough that winner.

3rd

MACKINTOSH (NZ)

Joao Moreira

Had a lovely run. Obviously, the pace didn’t suit him and he was hanging quite badly in the straight. If there was a bit more pace in the race the story could be different.

4th

MAURUS (GB)

Blake Spriggs

Super. I’d love to be able to buy a gate with him, he hasn’t drawn well at his last few. I had to get a long way back on a slow tempo and then make my run from the half mile. I thought he finished off really well.

5th

SPECTROSCOPE (USA)

Kerrin McEvoy

He ran well. He didn’t step away great and then the pace was only medium. He overraced a little bit through the middle part but he’s run on well so he’ll improve with that run and maybe a bit more rain around might help him.

6th

SHALMANESER

Tye Angland

Good run. Probably surprised everyone how well he went off his last run but he travelled well. I was caught up a little bit around the corner. Probably a bit unlucky not to finish closer so I’d keep an eye on him.

7th

PERFECT RHYME

Tim Clark

Got into a good spot but they just went too slow for her and she appreciates a bit more cut in the track.

8th

SENSE OF OCCASION

Corey Brown

He was a little disappointing. He had a great run in transit, travelled okay but the sprint went on at the 700m and he was very flat footed. He just whacked away up the straight, he was just a little bit on the plain side.

9th

HAVANA COOLER (IRE)

Glyn Schofield

He didn’t run much of a race at all today.

ALIZEE

Glyn Schofield

This filly has just given me so much confidence, especially from her last start win. She’s got a turn of speed second to none at the end of her race.
We had a chat before the race and our plan was definitely to be negative early on, if there was any doubts about the mile we were going to make sure she was switched off and relaxed, because once you let her go you saw what she can do.
James [Cummings], Darren [Beadman] and the team have done a fantastic job switching her mind off and getting her to relax and getting her to the races in a frame of mind where she is concentrating on what she’s doing and not her surroundings.

That’s the key to her, her mannerisms in the races. Hard pressed to suggest she won’t get further, she was really electric coming from the back of the field, I’m pretty happy she’s won over a mile.

2nd

CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES

Jason Collett

Perfect split through but the winner was dominant.

3rd

CELLARGIRL

Michael Walker

She actually didn’t step away but I ended up with a really good run. I thought I was half a chance at the top of the straight. I reckon she just ran out of puff and is looking for a break. I think Magic Millions she is going to be set for but really nice run.

4th

ONE MORE HONEY

Blake Shinn

Good run. Just couldn’t quicken at the vital stage but hit the line well. Crying out for 2000m.

5th

SMOOTH LANDING

Damian Lane

She ran well. She’ll be better for further.

6th

LUVALUVA (NZ)

Rachel King (a0)

Really good run stepping up to Group 1 company and she’ll go on with it from today.

7th

I AM EXCITED

Kerrin McEvoy

We settled back, got into a nice enough rhythm. Moved into it at the 250-300m mark and her run just levelled out so I’d say she’d come back in trip for her future assignments.

8th

SWEET DEAL

Hugh Bowman

Little bit far for her but outclassed anyway.

9th

PANDEMONIUM

Joao Moreira

She was a little bit tense before she got into the gate. She didn’t jump very well but she still had a beautiful run through, she was just unable to finish off the race.

10th

LEGAL GIRL

Corey Brown

She was really disappointing. She didn’t have a lot of luck, she was three wide back near the tail but even from the 900m she got cover and she just wasn’t the horse she was last time out.

11th

COLLEGE ROMANCE

Tim Clark

She ran according to her price.

IN HER TIME

Corey Brown

I was lucky enough to snag the ride at the trials at Rosehill and I haven’t had a horse trial like that in a long while, especially since I’ve been home from Singapore. She gives you the feel of a really good horse and I know she should have won a Stradbroke, she was very unlucky. She showed what she’s all about today, she travelled up really well, I may have got there a little bit too soon, setting it up for the backmarkers. But I was going so good and if I could pinch a break on them, I thought I would be better off doing that then getting into a ding-dong battle. She’s the real deal and she showed it here today.

2nd

ENGLISH

Blake Shinn

That was a tremendous run today. Obviously riding her that little bit quieter aided her. She gave me a great burst at the 250m. I think she may have peaked at the 50m but I think that will bring her on a lot going to The Everest and we’re in there with a live shot, it’s going to be an exciting race.

3rd

CLEARLY INNOCENT

Hugh Bowman

Superb effort.

4th

TAKEDOWN

Tim Clark

Really good run. I think he’s definitely come back in good order but probably looking forward to getting him to 1400m this prep.

5th

BALL OF MUSCLE

Glyn Schofield

He gives them something to catch, doesn’t he? He probably wants 100m or 200m less and he’ll be very effective.

6th

CHAUTAUQUA

Breton Avdulla

Still on target, grand final is in two weeks. I reckon he would’ve run the same sectionals today as he did the other day.

7th

KURO (NZ)

Joao Moreira

Quite a disappointing run but also wasn’t able to get to the outside and gain a clear run. I think he could’ve finished a little bit better if he had more room in the straight but unfortunately we can’t go back and change it.

8th

FELL SWOOP

Tye Angland

He went well. I was caught three deep on the speed, he went through a flat spot a little bit longer today but I like that he picked up late.

9th

NIETA

Damian Lane

She was bolting on the corner but unfortunately she’s just not letting go on these firmer tracks.

10th

PUMPKIN PIE

Jay Ford

I thought she ran really well. She was up in grade at weight for age and she stuck on one-paced through the line. She’s going on to the Anniversary Highway which she should be in right up to her ears.

11th

A bit fierce in the early and mid stages but worked home okay.

HAPPY CLAPPER

Blake Shinn

He jumped brilliantly today probably the best he has ever jumped, put him right behind Red Excitement. Speed was hot but he always travelled really well, we got there a little bit early for my liking, he was left there exposed as a sitting shot. He was primed for today, he’s the class horse and he did a great job. He [Tom Melbourne] was coming quickly and he may have sensed it because that last 50m he did respond under hard-riding. I’m just so happy for everyone involved. It’s their [Websters] first Group 1 and it obviously means a lot, not only to them but for me as well to do it for them.

2nd

TOM MELBOURNE (IRE)

Glen Boss

Chris has got him flying this preparation. He ran his heart out today and there’s a Group 1 win in him shortly.

3rd

SNITZSON

Cory Parish

Super run from him. He will probably benefit from the run today. He was a little bit keen early when he didn’t have the cover. Once the winner came in front of me he relaxed and hit the line nice so really happy with that.

4th

FOXPLAY

Hugh Bowman

I was delighted with her. A better draw might have been a different story but all honours to the winner, he’s the form horse and deserves it.

5th

SOUND PROPOSITION (NZ)

Corey Brown

He ran really well. I think that’s the best of him. He had a great run in transit outside the winner, we joined each other topping the straight but the winner was just too fast and he was deserved, well done Pat Webster.

6th

COMIN' THROUGH

Joao Moreira

A little bit unlucky as he was unable to get in and get some cover. But he was pretty much off his mind at the 700m and he wasn’t in the race any more.

7th

MCCREERY (GB)

Tommy Berry

He’s going nice but the track’s probably a little too firm for him, he likes to get his toe in a bit more.

8th

RED EXCITEMENT

Brenton Avdulla

He just pulled himself into the ground. We were bowling at a good speed but he just never came back to me.

9th

SAVILE ROW (NZ)

Jay Ford

He’s obviously very talented but he all he does is work against you. He just pulled himself into the ground and left himself with nothing to finish off.

10th

ZANBAGH

She never really travelled as well as she can today. Bit cluttered up on the corner and probably as firm as she wants it.

FOUNDRY (IRE)

Michael Dee

I’m speechless, I’ve never ridden a winner at this track, I’ve been up here a few times now. To win a Group 1, I just couldn’t be happier. To Lloyd Williams and the team at Macedon Lodge, thank you very much for having me on. The hose is a beauty, he’s just lovely to ride, they brought him here in tip-top shape and he ran accordingly. He jumped really well and got there quite easily, I didn’t have to use up much gas early. I got pushed out three-wide on the bend, but luckily I was able to come back and land in the one-one.
From then on he travelled beautifully throughout, the team said once he got to the 800m to make it a true staying test so I let him stride and to the horse's credit, he toughed it right out.

2nd

BIG DUKE (IRE)

Brenton Avdulla

He ran terrific. Thought he was the winner halfway up the straight. Probably from the 2000m to the 2400m on the back up he just felt the pinch the last 50m but he’s on target.

3rd

CHOCANTE (NZ)

Corey Brown

He ran great. I thought I was home when I topped the rise, the winner and the second horse were just that little bit sharper on the line but he ran super, the further he goes the better he’ll get.

4th

WHO SHOT THEBARMAN (NZ)

Hugh Bowman

5th

I thought he was pretty brave. Definitely a better performance this week down in the weights. He’s probably capable of going to Melbourne and picking off a slightly lesser race.

7th

A bit disappointing. He had a beautiful run through, just couldn’t finish it off with them.

8th

MY DIAMANTINE (NZ)

She ran out of her skin. When the tempo slackened around the back just passing the 1800m she just got on the chewy and threw her head. She just wouldn’t quite settle today, bit out of sorts, but looking good.

9th

LIFE LESS ORDINARY (IRE)

Kerrin McEvoy

Went to settle back and I was happy with how he travelled. Loomed into it and then my run ended at the furlong so my first thought when I hopped off was that he might enjoy more cut in the ground. Hopefully he gets some rain around for his upcoming runs in the spring.
