Tara Madgwick - Friday May 20

Three new promising 3YO stakes-winners overnight, one by Sea the Stars, who has had a big week, and two more from mares sired by his half-brother Galileo.

The Listed Height of Fashion Stakes (1m2f) at Goodwood for 3YO fillies was won by the William Haggas trained Sea Silk Road, who scored by half a length at her third start.

Silk Sea Road may well head next to Royal Ascot for the Group II Ribblesdale Stakes.

The 92nd stakes-winner for Sea the Stars, she comes from a German female family packed with stakes-winning stayers.

The Listed Cocked Hat Stakes (1m3f) also at Goodwood went to the David Menuisier trained Lope de Vega colt Lionel, who was taken out of the Epsom Derby, but is entered for a number of upcoming stakes races including  the Group I Irish Derby.

The 95th stakes-winner for Lope de Vega, Lionel broke his maiden in winning by a neck at his third start.

He is the first winner for Group II winning Galileo mare Gretchen, a half-sister to Group I Irish St Leger winner Duncan and Group II winning stayer Samuel.

He is the eighth SW for Lope de Vega bred from a daughter of Galileo, the nick running at 14% SW to runner, but the best of them are Group III winners that include Australian SW Le Lude.

The Group III Gallinule Stakes (1m2f) was won by the Joseph O’Brien trained Zoffany colt Hannibal Barca, who was a hot favourite and won by a length at his first start for his new trainer having previously been with Brian Meehan last season.

Fourth in a Group I last season after which he was sold for 500,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale last year, he looks likely to make his presence felt at that level this year.

He is the  49th stakes-winner for ill-fated Zoffany and is the best of six winners from stakes-winning Galileo mare Innocent Air. He comes from the same family as this year’s Hong Kong Derby winner Romantic Warrior.
