More forceful tactics had the desired effect on Jon Snow in Friday night's Group III JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Ridden forward by Stephen Baster from a wide barrier to settle in second place on the quarters of Kilmacurragh passing the 1600m, Jon Snow rolled alongside before the home turn and went clear.

Pressed by Ecuador ($11) in the home straight, Jon Snow ($9.50) always looked in control and went on to score by a length.

Jon Snow finished eighth last time out in the Group I Makybe Diva Stakes and Murray Baker, who trains Jon Snow in partnership with Andrew Forsman, said the easier company and more galloping room made the difference.

"All due respect to the opposition but this was a bit easier than he's been up against lately," Baker said.

"Going forward gave him the galloping room he needs and it all worked out well. He's a bull and he didn't like getting cluttered up between horses last start but it wasn't an issue tonight.

"The one concern we had was that he might need one more run but he's got away with it and that will do him the world of good."

Baker said the Caulfield Cup is the first main goal for the ATC Derby winning son of Iffraaj.

"I suppose it will be either the Herbert Power or the Caulfield Stakes next for him," Baker said.

"He's a good stayer and he got a good ride from Stephen Baster - that always helps!"
