Satono Aladdin's Koshu Blows Them Away On Debut

Mark Smith - Wednesday May 18

Rich Hill Stud’s royally bred shuttler Satono Aladdin (JPN) looks to have an outstanding prospect in the 2yo filly Koshu, who made a sensational debut over 1100m at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday.

Ridden by James McDonald for John O’Shea, Koshu had just three runners behind her at the 250m before exploding down the centre of the track.

Carrying the colours of Brent and Cherry Taylor’s Trelawney Stud, Koshu defeated the Russian Revolution colt Silentstar by a widening three and a quarter lengths with another son of Russian Revolution, Secret Revolution, a further half-length back in third.

There was no secret about the ability of Koshu, who started as a short-priced favourite off the back of a barrier trial that was highlighted on Breednet..

“She is a Queen of a filly to have at home. To come here and do that off one 740m (trial) is a testament to her quality,” O’Shea said.

uo;We will turn her out now and come back in the spring.

“Not a lot went right for her in the first half of the race. Mac got her in a lovely rhythm from the 700m, and she balanced up around the bend. She looked like she would give a good kick, and she did so.

“She never got lost when out in front, so there are some positives.

“She looks a classic miler. The family are good milers, and dad was a miler-mile and a quarter horse. Hopefully, we can stretch her out to a mile during the spring, and we will find a nice race for her.”

The Trelawney homebred has a bit to live up to being a half-sister to Group 1 WRC Thorndon Mile winner A Touch Of Ruby (Pins) and Group 1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas heroine Lore (Redoute’s Choice).

Koshu is the final foal of Syrah (Traditionally), a half-sister to  Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray (Zabeel) and Listed winner Bolton, out of the Group II winning Success Express mare Real Success.

Currently, the third leading first-crop sire in New Zealand, Group 1 Yasuda Kinen winner Satono Aladdin (JPN), is a brother to Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner Lachesis.

The son Deep Impact and the top-class Storm Cat mare Magic Storm stands at Rich Hill Stud in 2022 at a fee of $12,500.
