Mazu Secures Everest Slot

Media Release - Wednesday May 11

The Star and Arrowfield Stud announced today that they have completed negotiations with Triple Crown Syndications to secure rising star MAZU for their slot in The Everest, for both 2022 and 2023.

Arrowfield’s John Messara says, “While it’s generally a bit early to make a commitment for The Everest, I feel Mazu is a versatile young sprinter on a strong upward trajectory and we feared missing him by waiting any longer.

“It’s also an advantage that Chris & Michael Ward and Peter & Paul Snowden have already prepared Redzel to win two consecutive Everests, so they know exactly what is required.”

Messara adds, “Securing Mazu now with a two-year commitment allows Triple Crown and the Snowdens to focus on managing him for maximum results across multiple campaigns.”

The final agreement was reached after the 3YO Maurice (Jpn) gelding’s sparkling Randwick trial last Monday, ahead of the G1 Doomben 10,000 this coming Saturday, for which he is the $2.50 TAB Fixed Odds favourite.

Triple Crown Syndications’ Chris Ward says, “The Star and Arrowfield are both leaders in their respective fields and we along with our owners are delighted to have reached an agreement for Mazu to run in their slot.

“Comparisons have already been drawn between Mazu and Redzel and both are by Arrowfield stallions, so there is some great synergy there.

“To have our fourth Everest runner in the race’s six-year history is a massive thrill and we are hoping lightning can strike for a third time come October.”

Bred and sold by Parsons Creek, Mazu (Maurice-Chatelaine by Flying Spur) has built an impressive record this season, progressing through three Listed wins to a brilliant victory in last month’s $1 million G2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint. That took his record to six wins and $1.1 million prizemoney from 10 starts, and earned him a current Timeform figure of 122.
