First Stakes Win for Expensive Capitalist Colt Cannonball

Tara Madgwick - Saturday April 9

Fourth in the $1million ATC Golden Gift behind Sejardan, lightly raced Capitalist colt Cannonball has always shown plenty of ability and turned that into Black Type reality on Saturday at Caulfield when winning the Listed MRC Redoute’s Choice Stakes ( 1100m).

Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, Cannonball broke his maiden last start at Geelong and took good benefit and confidence from that outing to post a valuable win.

Ridden forward by Brett Prebble, he gave a good kick turning for home and stuck to his guns to win by three-quarters of a length and has now won two of four starts earning over $186,000 in prizemoney.

“He was a high priced yearling and has shown good ability from the start,” said Sam Freedman.

“We took him to Sydney for the Golden Gift and he ran a very bold race, just overdid it a bit in the blinkers and pulled up shinsore.

“He had a short break after that and it was the best thing that could have happened for him. Onwards and upwards.

A $975,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for James Harron Bloodstock, Cannonball was bred by China Horse Club, Newgate and partners and is a full brother to Group II winner Marine One and is the second winner from stakes-winning Snitzel mare Golconda, who was also third in the Group I VRC Oaks.

Golconda has no yearling for the sales this year, but did have a filly by Written Tycoon last spring and is now back in foal to Capitalist.

Cannonball is the eighth stakes-winner for Capitalist.
