One to Watch - Well Named Winner

Tara Madgwick - Friday March 4

When I saw the naming of this winner it was always going to be worth a story, but given it’s a three year-old debut winner by Frosted (USA) trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace let’s make him a One to Watch!

Ice Pick Nick was favourite for the 1100m maiden at Ararat on Friday and gave Linda Meech an easy task travelling in the lead and kicking on for a stylish length and a half win.

Ice Pick Nick was retained to race by his breeders and is a half-brother to Group II placed Curran and is the third winner from winning Street Cry (IRE) mare Tramell.

For people who remember the iconic murder thriller Basic Instinct starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, Stone’s character was Catherine Tramell and Douglas played detective Nick Curran.

There was the infamous leg crossing scene but also the ice pick murder hence the name Ice Pick Nick!

Tramell has a yearling colt by Frosted (USA) and a weanling filly by Impending, will be interesting to see what names they come up with for them!

She is also back in foal to Frosted, so Ice Pick Nick must have been showing connections good things at home for some time.
