Sire Profitability at Magic Millions Book 1 – Father and Son Rule the Roost

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 18

A record breaking sale and high clearance made for some very happy vendors at the 2022 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and while many stallions recorded best ever stats thank to the buoyant trade, some offered better returns than others.

The table below is a popular one with the sires sorted by return on service fee and it tends to highlight sires that stood at an affordable fee and have over-achieved in the sale ring with a stallion like I Am Invincible first showing signs of something special when appearing as a regular at the top end of this list in his early years at stud.

Newgate Farm’s fertility hampered Extreme Choice heads the list with his nine yearlings offered all sold averaging $399,444 off a $22,000 fee.

With a 20% stakes-winner to runner rate from his first crop of now three year-olds, Extreme Choice is hot property and with only 31 foals in this yearling crop, buyers are very aware that there is limited opportunity to secure his stock this year and it’s very much a case of quick and the dead.

The next three stallions on the list are Showtime (Snitzel), who stands at Arrowfield, Eureka Stud’s Encryption (Lonhro) and Grunt (O’Reilly), who stands at Yulong in Victoria.

They are all well credentialled first season sires that have produced the right type for the sale ring, whether their offspring can run remains to be seen, but appearing on this list is a good indication that plenty of buyers believe they will.

The list below is sire profitability sorted by the profit margin and it brings in the elite stallions on big fees that generate the seriously big prices at a sale.

Extreme Choice’s sire Not a Single Doubt is the front runner with his final crop of yearlings conceived when he was 18 and he is going out in a blaze of glory.
