Flemington
trainer Danny O'Brien will be looking at Black Type goals going forward for his
talented Denman mare Merriest following her bold front running victory at
Caulfield on Saturday.
A Listed winner last season at three, Merriest showed she was back to her best
with a tenacious half neck win in the 1400 metre mares event that closed the
program.
A $210,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newhaven draft for Barry and Jan
McRostie, Merriest was bred and sold by Newhaven Park and was the most
expensive filly of the year by her sire Denman.
She has proved a good investment winning four of 13 starts and over $290,000 in
prizemoney with her Black Type victory and the promise of more to come making
her a valuable broodmare for the future.
Merriest is the third foal and third winner out of the Melbourne winning Canny
Lad mare Merrier a granddaughter of the top-class mare Scomeld, whose 12 wins
included the Group I VRC Oaks.
