Juvenile Trial Watch – Canterbury

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 21

Five heats for two year-olds were run at Canterbury on Tuesday and the quickest winner was a Zoustar colt in the China Horse Club colours, while the half-brother to Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign also impressed and a Capitalist colt in the JHB colours is a mirror image of his sire.

It’s hard not to feel a bit of déjà vu watching Capitalist colt London, a $600,000 Inglis Classic purchase for James Harron Bloodstock that is trained by Chris Waller.

The powerful chestnut is a dead ringer for his sire when you see him in action and despite wanting to race a little keenly behind the leaders in the early stages, he let down impressively for James McDonald to win his heat by half a length over the fast finishing So You Think colt Perfect Thought.

London was the second highest priced yearling sold at Inglis Classic and is the second foal of Mystical Tale, a winning Encosta de Lago mare, whose grand-dam is Golden Slipper winner Polar Success.

Davali Thoroughbreds will offer his full sister at Inglis Classic as Lot 105.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, good looking colt Metallicity clocked a second quicker than all the other juvenile heats when powering home out wide to win his 890m heat by a length and a half in 55.29 seconds.

A $340,000 Inglis Easter purchase for China Horse Club / Newgate Bloodstock from the Segenhoe draft, Metallicity is a half-brother to Group III ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Catch Me and three other winners being from well bred O’Reilly mare Captivating Claire.

Captivating Claire consistently produces stunning looking yearlings with three of her offspring outside of Catch Me all selling for $1million or more in the sale ring and while all of them have won, they are yet to achieve Black Type performance.

China Horse Club and Newgate also share in the ownership of the Richard and Michael Freedman trained Snitzel colt Current King, who is a sibling to Champion 2YO Filly and two time Group I winner She Will Reign and Group II ATC Silver Slipper Stakes winner Time to Reign.

Current King showed natural pace from the gates to lead on the fence and when headed in the straight by Sweet Ride he fought back strongly for Tommy Berry to win by a neck in 56.63 seconds.

A $650,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Evergreen Stud Farm draft, Current King is the sixth foal from star producer Courgette, who was bought by Evergreen Stud for $2.1million at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Sadly for Evergreen Stud, Courgette died earlier this year and her final foal, a yearling colt by Sntizel has been entered for 2022 Inglis Easter.

Other 2YO  heat winners were: Madam Pommery (No Nay Never (USA) and  Portray (Ribchester (IRE).
