One to Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday December 3

A three year-old filly from the last crop of Waikato Stud’s former champion sire Pins looks like she’s going places in a hurry after a stylish maiden win at Randwick on Friday.

A homebred for David Paykel trained by Chris Waller, Finepoint was a good fourth on debut at Kembla in late October before chasing home the highly rated filly Banana Queen (So You Think) when second at Rosehill on November 17.

Sent out favourite for the 1400m maiden with James McDonald in the saddle, Finepoint was sporting blinkers for the first time and was always travelling well before powering clear to win by a couple of lengths.

James McDonald was well pleased with Finepoint, who relaxed well in the blinkers before hitting the line hard.

“She’s a good filly that oozes quality. She will shoot through her grades really quickly,” he said.

Finepoint is a half-sister to Group III winner Serious Satire and Group II placed Star Tsar being the sixth winner from six foals to race from Group II winning Zabeel mare Zarzuela, who was also bred and raced by David Paykel.

Zarzuela is a half-sister to Group II winner Satin Shoes from Group I winner and Champion NZ 3YO Sprinting Filly Star Satire, so there is loads of quality in the pedigree of Finepoint.

the last crop of foals sired by much missed sire Pins are three year-olds.

An outstanding sire for Waikato Stud for many years, Pins passed away in 2018 at the age of 21 and to date has left 85 stakes-winners headed by his Cox Plate winner El Segundo.
