First Group I Winner for Caravaggio

Very few horses can win a Group I race at their second start, but miraculous filly Tenebrism did just that.

Brilliant grey dual Group I winning sprinter Caravaggio (USA) shuttled for just one season to Coolmore Australia and that crop of foals are two year-olds this season, their sire making news overnight when posting his first Group I winner.

Talented filly Tenebrism was his first winner when she scored on debut at Naas back in March and she is now his first Group I winner after taking out the Group I Cheveley Park Stakes (6f) at Newmarket.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, Tenebrism proved too strong for Starspangledbanner filly Flotus winning by a length at just her second race start.

The win impressed bookmakers with her price trimmed into 8-1 for next season's 1,000 Guineas, so she is obviously a very exciting prospect.
 



“I didn't think it was possible to do it, not because of ability, but because of the lay-off she had,” Aidan O’Brien revealed.

“Tenebrism had a setback after the last day and was off for a long time. She was just literally ready to come racing and I had a knot in my stomach whether it was fair to be running her or not but there is only one Cheveley Park and you don't get horses with speed and the turn of foot she has very often and that is why she is here really.

“She went to the line very strong and she is an exciting filly. If she was to go again it would be America but the lads will decide if they want to go to the Breeders' Cup or put her away. It will depend how she comes out of that as she was just barely ready to come to the races.”



Bred and retained to race by Coolmore and partners, Tenebrism is the best of three winners from dual Group I winning Pivotal mare Immortal Verse, who comes from the family of champion sire Last Tycoon.

Tenebrism is the fourth stakes-winner and first Group I winner for Caravaggio, a brilliant Group I winning sprinter by Scat Daddy.

Caravaggio had 57 yearlings sell in Australasia this year at an average $78,061 this year and below are his top five sales.
