One To Watch - Newbury

Mark Smith - Sunday September 19

Bred by Pencarrow Stud and New Zealand Bloodstock supremo Sir Peter Vella in association with the Stanley family’s New England Stud, the Lope de Vega colt Dubai Poet looks to have a bright future judging on his five and a half-length romp over 7-furlongs at Newbury overnight.

Ridden by Andrea Atzeni for trainer Roger Varian, Dubai Poet lengthened impressively to break his maiden at start two.

The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum colour-bearer flagged his ability when fourth over the same course and distance when on debut on August 13.

His trainer purchased Dubai Poet for $140,000gns at the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

He is the second foal of the Fastnet Rock mare Hundi (IRE), who was almost certainly better than the bare facts of one win in 12 starts suggests.

The 270,000 gns Tattersalls purchase was runner-up in the £100,00 Tattersalls Millions Fillies at Newmarket and contested three Listed Stakes and a Group III after breaking her maiden.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock is a half-sister to four stakes-winners led by the Group 1 Irish St Leger winner Flag Of Honour (Galileo).

It was a timely win by Dubai Poet as New England Stud will consign a Kingman half-sister in Book 1 of the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
