Widden Stud Victoria’s Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente (IRE) has proven to be a very reliable source of winners and stakes horses with his merits highlighted on Saturday with a two state metropolitan double courtesy of Don’t Doubt Dory (Moonee Valley) and Melody Man( Morphettville).



A progressive five year-old gelding trained by Julien Welsh, Don’t Doubt Dory was retained to race by his breeder Jacqui van Bree after passing in at sales as a yearling and has proven a great success for his connections.

Don’t Doubt Dory was spelled after winning at Flemington back in May and resumed from his break at Moonee Valley on Saturday to win the 1600m open handicap by three-quarters of a length as favourite.

Don’t Doubt Dory has won six of 13 starts earning over $270,000 in prizemoney and the best is still to come!



South Australian trainer Jake Stephens might be best known for training Group I winning stayer Alcopop, but he has another promising staying prospect on the rise in Fiorente gelding Melody Man.

The five year-old made it back to back wins at Morphettville, when he bolted in over 1950m to win by more than three lengths as a raging hot favourite.

Retained to race by his breeders, Melody Man has three wins and four placings from nine starts and nearly $80,000 in prizemoney, but one senses the surface has only been scratched with this up and coming stayer.

Fiorente is priced this spring in the breed to race range at $11,000, which is the cheapest fee he has ever stood for and remarkable value given his statistics.

Fiorente runs at 52% winners to runners and has seven stakes-winners to his credit, plus another four Black Type place-getters with his two Group II winners Stars of Carrum and Hawkshot both being Group I placed.

His winners are generally in the distance range of 1600m and upwards, so for broodmare owners looking for some quality stamina to add to the equation Fiorente is affordable and proven.

Also worth noting he has two big crops of 80 plus two year-olds and yearlings coming through that will drive his success into the future, so if you had the thought to have a crack at breeding a stayer this spring Fiorente makes plenty of appeal.
