Winx to be Covered by Pierro

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday August 25

The ownership group of champion mare Winx have issued a statement today revealing their champion has been given the green light for another season at stud with Golden Slipper winning sire Pierro chosen as her partner.

Winx retired to stud in 2019, but her first covering to I Am Invincible resulted in a tragic outcome with the mare losing a foal by I Am Invincible and very nearly losing her life as well.

The following statement was released via Twitter confirming Coolmore’s champion sire Pierro as her partner for 2021.

“Winx has been given a full year to recover from her ordeal and we are pleased to report that the mare has returned in great condition.

“She has been enjoying life on the farm with some friends while she is preparing to go back to the breeding barn this spring.”

Coolmore based Pierro is the best son of champion sire Lonhro, who has an emerging nick with Winx’s sire Street Cry (IRE), with five winners from six runners bred this way highlighted by Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lyre.

Three more stakes-winners - Arcaded, Osborne Bulls and Gaulois  - are by Street Cry or his son Street Boss (USA) from Lonhro mares, so there is a growing affinity between the two sires.
