Seven on the Bounce for Toronado's Corner Pocket

Mark Smith - Saturday August 21

It's a very good horse that can win seven races in a career and an exceptional one that can win seven on the bounce.

On Saturday, the Lindsey Smith-trained Toronado (IRE) gelding Corner Pocket achieved the feat at Moonee Valley when  Declan Bates guided him to an all-the-way victory in a benchmark 90 over 1200m.

Corner Pocket was out of gas on the line, holding the Written Tycoon gelding Ocular by a rapidly diminishing half-neck with the Scat Daddy import Yulong Storm (USA) a further one and three-quarter lengths back in third.

"He is a beauty; the old picket fence keeps getting longer. Seven in a row is a good achievement, stable representative Shane Jackson said.

"Lyndsay makes a plan for these horses, and he does not go to the well too many times. He won last start and had a little break. The better races are at this time of the year so see where he goes from today.

'After today, he is still going to be a low to mid ninety rated horse. Lindsey may have a grander plan but is still capable of another handicap win in handicap company."

A $75,000 pinhook by Musk Creek Farm out of the Swettenham Stud draft at the 2017 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale, Corner Pocket made $175,000 to the bid of Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) / L Smith when offered by Musk Creek at the 2018 Inglis Classic.

The 5yo gelded son of Toronado (IRE) advances his record to seven wins, a second and a third from nine starts with earnings of $254,357.

He is the second live foal and first winner for the winning Commands mare Baize, a granddaughter of the crack racemare Shame (Scenic), whose six wins included the Group 1 VATC One Thousand Guineas, Group 1, QTC Sires' Produce Stakes, Group II AJC Surround Stakes and Group II STC Queen of the Turf Stakes.

Baize was purchased for just $4,000 at the 2018 Inglis September Monthly Online Sale. She was barren at the time but subsequently produced a 2yo brother to Corner Pocket and a yearling colt by Puissance De Lune (IRE). She revisited Puissance De Lune (IRE) last spring.

Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado (IRE) stands at a fee of $49,500.
