Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday August 20

With the backing for the unraced Zoustar filly Zouzarella in the opening event over 1200m for three-year-old fillies at Moonee Valley on Saturday, the honest Brazen Beau filly Zapateo is getting out to backable odds.

The James Cummings-trained filly has done little wrong in her three starts to date.

After making a winning career debut at Geelong, Zapateo was runner-up to the Written Tycoon filly Libiamo over 1100m at Caulfield. Libiamo franked the form with a fast-finishing fifth in the Group III Quezette Stakes won by Gimmie Par.

Zapateo went to the Valley for a solid win over 1000m on July 31.

We had some luck last week with Ingratiating, a son of the Lonhro mare Obsequious, and Lonhro features once again as the sire of Zapateo’s dam Jerezana.

Descending from a family nurtured by the late Ross Cribb, Jerezana produced six foals before her tragic death in 2019.

Cribb raced the Luskin Star filly La Caissiere whose wins included the AJC Flight Stakes, Surround Stakes and VRC Wakeful Stakes.

She is the dam of the dual Group 1 winner Dashing Eagle (Danehill).

Another daughter of La Caissiere, Cashing In (Salieri), left the stakes-placed Portview and the 10-time winner Tranquil Love, the dam of the Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude winner Brief Embrace (Irgun), who was runner-up in the Group 1 Blue Diamond.

Portview (Handy Proverb) produced six winners, the best of which was the dual Listed winner and Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes runner-up Barawin (Barathea) and her stakes-placed sister Saddler’s Silk, who placed in the Group 1 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Saddler’s Silk is the dam of Jerezana, who had stakes-placings at Flemington and Doomben before coming from last to win the 2011 Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.

The daughter of Lonhro was then placed behind Red Tracer and Secret Admirer in the Listed Toy Show Quality at Warwick Farm.

The first foal of Jerezana was the stakes-placed Commands gelding Badajoz who has banked $625,625 with seven wins and 14 placings from 40 starts.

Next came the star of the team, Osborne Bulls. The son of Street Cry (IRE) won the Group II VRC TAB Stakes and a pair of Listed stakes on his way to contributing $2,871,760 to the Godolphin coffers.

It could have been so much more, having finished runner-up in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, Group 1 All-Aged Stakes, Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes, and third in The Everest.

The third foal of Jerezana is the Exceed And Excel gelding Sedition, a 6-time winner of $349,675.

Fourth foal Mercury, a 4yo brother to Zapateo, is a 2-time winner of $82,330.

Following Zapateo, the final foal of Jerezana is the 2yo Street Boss (USA) colt Zaragoza.

Five of Jerezana’s six foals were colts, so it will be up to Zapateo to carry on the family fortunes.

The daughter of Brazen Beau is a gorgeous looking filly, and there will be more to plunder on the track before she heads the breeding shed.
