One to Watch – Ballarat

Tara Madgwick - Monday August 16

Deep Field gave us an eye-catching debut winner at Ballarat that is destined for far bigger things.

Red Hawk wins by six - image Racing Photos.

Tony and Calvin McEvoy picked the 1000m maiden at Ballarat on Monday to unleash three year-old colt Red Hawk, who was clearly in a class of his own when powering away to win by six lengths.

Winning rider Luke Currie was super impressed with the colt, who showed great acceleration to take up the early lead.

“I knew how brilliant he is, but he actually surprised me how quickly he got across them today,” said Currie.

“Then he got there and pricked his ears and just cruised along and it was nice and easy. A good education for him. He's definitely above average. He couldn't be any more impressive today.”

Tony McEvoy has lofty plans for the colt with the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) the ultimate aim with a race like the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1100m) in September a possible stepping stone.

“He's a horse we love but of course there's butterflies when you bring a really good-quality colt to the races that he doesn't make any mistakes. We just needed to see that on game-day pressure and I was suitably impressed with him,” McEvoy said.

A $260,000 Inglis Classic purchase for McEvoy Mitchell Racing / Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA)  from the Newhaven Park draft, Red Hawk is the second winner from She Chose Me, an unraced half-sister by Foxwedge to multiple Group I winner and $4.5million earner Zipping.

Red Hawk was bred by Seymour Bloodstock with Darren Thomas retaining a share in his ownership.
