The second evening of the August Yearling Sale, that was held in alphabetical order and featured the second half of Part 1 of the catalogue, recorded excellent results: a total of 78% of the yearlings presented were sold for an average price of €307,787, generating a turnover of €18,775,000.
Bringing together 157 lots in total, Part I of the catalogue returned to levels close to those of 2018, just behind the very good results of 2019. A total of 75% of the yearlings offered changed hands.
The average price reached €257,136 (-11%) and the turnover amounted to €30,462,000 (-9%).
Half-sister to recent Group winner BABYLONE makes top price at the sale
The turn in the ring of a daughter of Dubawi from Haras d’Etreham (lot 108) saw Charlie Gordon-Watson make his presence felt in Deauville.
With an additional update following the publication of the catalogue after the filly’s half-sister BABYLONE’s win in the Prix de Malleret (Gr.2) at ParisLongchamp, a strong bidding war ensued, which saw the agent go to €2.4 million for the granddaughter of Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr.1) heroine DENEBOLA, that hails back to the very successful Niarchos family of COUP DE GENIE.
“She’s an outstanding filly - I think that she is the nicest daughter of Dubawi that I have ever seen,” said the agent.
“She’s a daughter of Dubawi and her dam has already produced two good horses including Babylone, that is now a Group winner. She’ll join Andre Fabre, who also liked her a lot.”
Consigned by Haras d’Etreham, the filly is the second generation of her family bred and raised by Haras Voltaire, the young entreprise founded by Zadig & Voltaire founder Thierry Gillier, situated close to Deauville.
The stud’s advisor Laurent Benoit explained, “Typique is the first mare we purchased for breeding. She comes from a magnificent Niarchos family, that of Coup De Génie, Coup De Folie and Natalma, the dam of Northern Dancer, who revolutionised thoroughbred breeding. The first two fillies were kept to race and are at André Fabre’s. We started to sell some yearlings last year with the help of ARQANA and we decided to enter this one in the spring. We would like to thank Haras d’Etreham who have done a great job. We are delighted.”
A little earlier in the evening, Charlie GordonWatson also signed for a daughter of Frankel out of Listed winner SOTKA from Ecurie des Monceaux (lot 99). The agent went to €525,000 to secure the half-sister to Group winners FAS and SILVA from the family of Champion sprinter SOLE POWER.
Half-brother to ANGEL BLEU sold for €1.5 million
Ecurie des Monceaux offered a half-brother to ANGEL BLEU (lot 152), that provided a timely update at the end of last month when taking the runner-up spot in the Pat Eddery Stakes (L.) before going on to triumph Vintage Stakes (Gr.3) at the Qatar Goodwood Festival just three days later. It was Oliver St Lawrence that had the final say for the Siyouni colt at €1.5 million, having already been very active on Saturday.
Out of a sister to the very talented HIGHLAND REEL, the colt hails from the well-known family of Australian performers CIRCLE OF GOLD and ELVSTROEM.
After signing the docket, the agent said, “He’s a lovely colt that had a very good update following the victory of his half-brother. If he’s as good as him then we have made the right choice! I’ve bought him for Fawzi Nass. He’ll go to England and we’ll see where he’ll go into training.”
Two lots later, Oliver St Lawrence was also successful in securing a daughter of Sea The Stars out of Prix Rose de Mai (L.) winner CHILDA (lot 154). The gavel fell at €575,000 for the halfsister to Prix la Force (Gr.3) victor CHILEAN from Baroda Stud.
“She’s a very athletic filly that really caught our attention,” said the agent. “We went a little further on price than we had in mind, but she’s worth it.”
€900,000 for a half-sister to WONDERMENT
Simon Mockridge, the manager of Juddmonte Farms in England, signed the docket at €900,000 for a daughter of Dubawi (lot 117) from Haras de l’Hotellerie.
The blue-blooded filly hails from the excellent German family of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner WALDGEIST.
“She’s a lovely filly that walks well,” said Simon Mockridge. “She’s from a family of several Group 1 winners, which really adds value to her pedigree. We’re very happy with the purchase and her future will be decided in due course.”
Son of Kingman for Godolphin
After purchasing a daughter of Kingman on Saturday for €950,000, Anthony Stroud secured another yearling by the Juddmonte (lot 113) sire during today’s session, this time a colt for €850,000.
Offered from Haras de SaintPair, the colt is out of Listed scorer VIA PISA, a half-sister to Japanese triple Group 1 winner ADMIRE MARS. Near the end of the sale, the agent also signed for a half-brother by Dubawi to Prix Miesque (Gr.3) winner DEVANT (lot 163) for €650,000 from Ecurie des Monceaux.
“He’s a good-looking colt by Dubawi, that needs no introduction,” said the agent. “We really like him and are very happy to have got him.” €650,000 for a daughter of Siyouni The Coolmore team went to €650,000 for a daughter of Siyouni from Ecurie des Monceaux (lot 160). The granddaughter of Group winner CLOUD CASTLE is from the close family of Breeders’ Cup Fillies and Mares Turf (Gr.1) winner QUEEN’S TRUST and DOMESTIC SPENDING, that scored in the Manhattan Stakes (Gr.1) and Turf Classic Stakes (Gr.1) in the United States this season.
“She’s a very nice filly that caught our eye, and by a very good stallion” said M.V. Magnier. “Henri Bozo and his team always do a great job.”
Following the second day of the sale, ARQANA President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell commented, “Following a year when the format was changed in 2020, the first part of the August Sale is back to levels close to those we experienced before Covid. Yesterday’s start was tentative, but today’s results were solid. The sale was conducted in a professional environment and we can already thank all the players in the sector who joined together with us to move in the same direction. Our vendors did a very good job. The buyers trusted us and were there, despite the travel constraints that remain for some of them. We now look forward to the second part of the sale and then v.2 on Tuesday.”
