Belardo Champion NZ First Season Sire

Media Release - Monday August 2

The effort of Haunui graduate Yeaboi (NZ) (Belardo) in the Ryder Stakes on Saturday not only added another stakes performer to BELARDO’s first crop tally but also secured him the title of New Zealand’s Champion First Season Sire for 2021.

BELARDO’s first crop have certainly set a platform for the season ahead with a total of six winners – two of those in Australia – and three stakes performers in the form of AVONALLO, Fonsalette and Yeaboi

All three stakes performers look set to make their mark early in the new season with AVONALLO likely to head to the Northland Breeders Stakes enroute to the 2000 Guineas, Fonsalette picking a path to the 1000 Guineas whilst Yeaboi will head toward the Whanganui Guineas with the New Zealand Derby pencilled in the calendar for the autumn.

Due to arrive in New Zealand next week for his fifth Southern Hemisphere season, BELARDO is well positioned to continue his success having served an average of over 100 mares in each of his four seasons so far.

Haunui Farm’s Managing Director, Mark Chitty says, “BELARDO has certainly made a great start and to take out the Champion First Season Sire title is credit to all the broodmare owners who have supported him.  He’s left some early running types but I think we might see some nice Classic horses this season and beyond, perhaps along the lines of what we’ve seen from his grand-sire, SHAMARDAL and if BELARDO can be half as good a stallion, we’ll be very happy!”

BELARDO stands at a fee of $10,000 + GST.
