Nathaniel Not Just the Sire of Enable

Tara Madgwick - Thursday July 29

Galileo stallion Nathaniel might be best known as the sire of champion mare Enable, but he added a new Group I winner to his tally at Goodwood  overnight where five year-old mare Lady Bowthorpe held off the three year-olds to win the Nassau Stakes (1m2f).

The William Jarvis trained Lady Bowthorpe has been in career best form this year with a  second in the Group I Lockinge Stakes and last start fourth in the Group I Falmouth Stakes.

She powered clear to win by a length and a half giving her rider Keiran Shoemark his first Group I win.

“We've dreamt about this for a long time, we knew Lady Bowthorpe was special. I'm so chuffed for the team at home, we only have a staff of seven or eight and they all work so hard,” said William Jarvis.

“I was confident she'd stay, I was a little worried about Roger's filly second placed (Zeyaadah), but she has that great turn of foot which is her real strength and she settles so much better now.”

Purchased for 82,000 guineas at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Lady Bowthorpe has won five of 16 starts.

She is a half-sister to Group II winner Speak in Colours and stakes-placed Pretty in Grey from Maglietta Fina.

Lady Bowthorpe is the fourth Group I winner among 24 stakes-winners sired by Nathaniel, who stands at Newsells Park at a fee of 15,000 pounds.
