Breednet Follows the Canterbury 2YO Trials

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 18
I'm not at Canterbury, but watching these on Sky Thoroughbred Central, so let's take a look at the bloodstock and breeding angles behind these first season two year-old trial winners at Canterbury on Monday morning.

Heat Twelve - Exceed and Excel

Champion sire Exceed and Excel had the most runners at this set of trials and sired a fourth winner with the James Cummings trained Godolphin colt Osorno taking the last heat when surging home hard along the inside late to win by three-quarters of a length.

Osorno is the first foal of Antillanca, an unraced half-sister by Street Cry (IRE) to Group II winner Ghisoni and daughter of Group II winning Golden Slipper place-getter Portillo.

Heat Eleven   - Sizzling

Line Up GirlsSnitzel’s Group I winning son Sizzling put a winner on the board here with a professional effort form the Gary Moore trained colt Line Up Girls. The compact chestnut took up the lead and stayed there, repelling all challengers to win by half a length.

A $160,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale purchase from the Gleeson Thoroughbreds draft for his trainer, Line Up Girls is from Crimson Belle, a three-quarter sister by Red Ransom (USA) to Group III winner Crimson Reign.

Crimson Reign is the dam of star performer Deploy, who has broken the track record at his past two stakes wins in Sydney.

Another all women owned winner, Line Up Girls will have his eyes on the big prize at the Gold Coast in January.

Heat Ten   - Snitzel

MunichPeter and Paul Snowden send out another heat winning colt by champion sire Snitzel with Munich carrying the China Horse Club colours to an easy win. The handsome bay led throughout and gave a good kick to win by nearly two lengths.

A $750,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for WinStar Farm / China Horse Club, Munich was foaled and raised at Newgate and is a blueblood being from stakes-placed Encosta de Lago mare Quench the Thirst, a full sister to Group III winner Precious Lorraine and stakes-winner Lucky Raquie.

A grand-daughter of legendary blue hen Shantha’s Choice (dam of Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain and Platinum Scissors), Quench the Thirst was bought by Newgate Farm for $1.5million at the Teeley Assets Dispersal in 2014.

Heat Nine - Exceed and Excel

And it’s three in a row for Darley’s champion sire Exceed and Excel with the Chris Waller trained colt Performer posting a narrow win over I Am Invincible colt Spin. Performer had to work his way into the clear, but showed a good turn of foot and was tenacious at the finish to claim the victory.

A $450,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newhaven Park draft for Harras Syndicate/ Mulcaster Bloodstock, Performer is a half-brother to Group I winner Bel Sprinter from Gavroche.

Heat Eight – Exceed and Excel FASTEST FILLY

Witherspoon - is her stable name Reese?Champion sire Exceed and Excel posted his second winner this morning when flashy chestnut filly Witherspoon dashed clear to win by a couple of lengths in a dominant display.

Trained by Brad Widdup, she has an all-female ownership so you can guess this girl will be Magic Millions bound if her racing career replicates her trial success.

A $500,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Segenhoe stud draft for Jadeskye Racing / Top 10 Syndicate, Witherspoon is a half-sister to Group III winner Taking Aim from stakes-winner Girl Hussler.

Witherspoon was the most expensive filly by her sire sold at this sale.

Heat Seven - Exceed and Excel FASTEST COLT

James Cummings and Godolphin posted their first winner of the session with a very impressive win here for Exceed and Excel colt Hiemal. I Am Invincible colt Invincible Lad made all the running and kicked clear, but when Hiemal was asked to chase he did so and caught the other colt who was not hammered to the line to win by a length and a quarter with six lengths back to the third horse.

Hiemal is a full brother to Group II winner Kuroshio, Group III winner Believe’n’Succeed and stakes-winner Agulhas.

Judging by this trial he will be stakes-winner number four for Darley’s very good producer Arctic Drift (USA) sooner rather than later.

Heat Six - Pierro

A homebred for Mrs Belinda Bateman prepared by Peter and Paul Snowden, superbly bred Pierro filly Satin Slipper showed good race sense to settle off the pace and accelerate smoothly to the line to win comfortably.

Foaled and raised at Newgate Farm, Satin Slipper is the first foal of former brilliant Flying Spur filly Satin Shoes, winner of the Group II ATC Silver Slipper and a daughter of Group I winner Star Satire. Satins Shoes was raced by Mrs Bateman and her late husband Dr Edmund Bateman.

Satin Shoes has a yearling filly by Medaglia D’Oro (USA) and has already foaled this spring producing a filly by Written Tycoon.

Heat Five - Not a Single Doubt

Mark Newnham produced a ready made two year old type here in Quackerjack, a dashing chestnut with a white face reminiscent in appearance of quite a number of the sire’s very good baldy faced chestnuts including his Blue Diamond winner Miracles of Life.

He travelled behind the leaders and when angled into the clear, he hit the line well to win by the best part of a length.

A $240,000 Magic Millions purchase for his trainer from the Rosari Farm draft, Quackerjack is from Quack It, a winning half-sister to stakes-winner Anatina and Pricked from the brilliant fast Mother Duck family that has produced other stakes-winners such as Ladys Angel and Alberto Magic.

Heat Four - I Am Invincible

Bold ArialGai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott landed this one with I Am Invincible filly Bold Arial, who raced just off the pace in the pack and hit the line hard when she got clear to win by more than a length.

A $105,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft for First Light Racing /G Waterhouse / A Bott / Paul Willetts Bloodstock, Bold Arial was bred by Jilly Henderson and is the first winner for Helvetica, a fast metro winner of three races, whose family traces back to outstanding filly Princess Talaria.

The first three dams are by some questionable sires in Zariz, Honour and Glory (USA) and Rigoletto and there is nothing I Am Invincible likes better than a mare with an average pedigree he can upgrade with a stakes-winner – Bold Arial fits the bill!

Heat Three - Snitzel

BondiChampion sire Snitzel was into the frame with a very professional win for the Peter and Paul Snowden trained colt Bondi, who led all the way and won by a length and a quarter.

A $400,000 Magic Millions purchase for China Horse Club and partners from the Strawberry Hill Stud, Bondi’s owners also include his breeder John Singleton.

Bondi is from winning Red Ransom (USA) mare Bondi Blonde, a sibling to Group winners Danroad and Strawberry Boy.

Singo will be hoping Bondi is above average as the mare has a yearling colt by Snitzel and will foal to him again this spring.

Heat Two - Epaulette

MerylThe first fillies event provided a great result for Darley’s first season sire Epaulette, who sired the winner Meryl trained by Lee Curtis. She jumped straight to the front and opened up a lead before cruising home to win easily by a space.

A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase for Randwick Bloodstock / Mystery Downs from the Riversdale Farm draft, Meryl was bred by Nick Hodges and is a half-sister to stakes-placed performers in Chosen Idol and Miss Idyllic, who was a very smart 2YO

Epaulette is already the sire 14 winners in the Northern Hemisphere from his first crop runners in Europe.

Heat One - I am Invincible

I Am Invincible sired the first trial winner with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt Landon, jumping fast to lead and going on with it to win easily by a couple of lengths.

A $320,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Gai and Adrian from the Willow Park draft, Landon runs for a syndicate including Aquis Farm in whose colours he runs.

He was a successful pinhook having been bred and sold as a weanling by South Coast nursery Bell View Park for $150,000 at Magic Millions.

He is a half-brother to Group III placed Leotie from stakes placed High Chaparral mare Prairie Star, who won up to 2100 metres.
