Camelot's Hosier Takes the Next Step

Mark Smith - Thursday July 1

The exciting Camelot (GB) gelding Hosier (IRE) kept his record at a perfect two for two in Australia with an authoritative display in a class 1 over 1600m at Bendigo on Thursday.

Ben Melham jumped the Robert Hickmott-trained 4yo away smartly. However, Dean Yendall on Carbino pushed up on the inside to ensure the odds-on favourite wasn’t gifted a comfortable lead before eventually accepting his fate.

A facile five and a half-length winner over 1500m on the same track on June 25, Hosier was throttled down to win by four lengths from   Cabinho (Atlante) with Simon Says (Rebel raider a further four and a quarter-length back in third.

Hosier made his career debut when finishing midfield over 10-furlongs at Leoparsatown in June last year in what must rate as one of the hottest maidens in recent years.

The winner was Tiger Moth (Galileo) from Dawn Patrol (Galileo) and Order of Australia (Australia). That trio then chased home Santiago in the Irish Derby.’

Order Of Australia would travel to Keeneland for a shock win in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, while Dawn Patrol would win a Group III at The Curragh.

Tiger Moth won a Group III at Leopardstown before finishing second in the Group 1 Lexus Melbourne Cup.

The Lloyd Williams colour-bearer Hossier (IRE) had one more start in Ireland, finishing second to Charity House, a smart performer in Hong Kong.

Melham said the sons of Camelot is very promising but warns about getting too carried away.

“He has taken the next step here today,” Melham told Racing.com.

“He did a little bit of work to cross but had it pretty comfortable when he got there.

“He let down well and felt more switched on than the other day.

“He feels a lovely horse; he did not beat a lot here today, so we won’t be getting carried away yet

“ He is a promising horse with a nice future.”

Bred by Robert Lanigan, Hosier was purchased by his previous trainer Joseph O’Brien for €110,000 out of the La Motteraye consignment at the 2018 Arqana August Yearling Sale.

He is out of the Group 1 French Oaks runner-up Time Ahead (Spectrum), a half-sister to Group III Mussidora Stakes winner Time Away (Darshaan), also placed in the French Oaks.

Time Ahead’s granddam is the champion Time Charter a 4-time Group 1 winner of the Epsom Oaks, Champion Stakes, King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and Coronation Cup.
