Mare in Foal to Pierata Sells for $1million

Media Release - Wednesday May 26

Former outstanding sprinter Quilista topped the second day of the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast today when selling for $1 million.

Offered as part of a quality draft from Segenhoe Stud, Quilista was knocked down to leading New Zealand bloodstock agent Bruce Perry on behalf of New South Wales based thoroughbred nursery Cressfield.
Session topper on Wednesday was Quilista selling in foal to Pierata for $1million.

"I came to buy her," Cressfield's Bruce Neill said moments after the hammer fell. "She was the pick of the ones I wanted at the sale."

"She's a very fast mare and my strategy is to buy fast mares, clear of Danehill and she fits the bill beautifully."

"She'll probably go to Snitzel this season. I think Snitzel will suit her - a fast stallion over a fast mare, it seems a good recipe," Neill added.

Quilista, who started her career in Perth with Justin Warwick, won nine races during her career and earned connections over $750,000 - not bad considering she was just a $10,000 Perth Yearling Sale buy.

A winner at stakes level in Western Australia, she transferred east and subsequently won a Group Two Sapphire Stakes, Group Three Birthday Card Stakes and listed Bright Shadow Handicap.

Quilista is in foal to Group One winning sprinter Pierata in her second season at stud. Her first foal, a colt by I Am Invincible, sold to Fernrigg Farm for $340,000 at last week's National Weanling Sale.

Meanwhile, a syndicate of Triple Crown owners celebrated mid way through the day when their star mare Moss Trip was sold to Kia Ora Stud for $900,000.

The Mossman mare, in foal to Trapeze Artist, won five races during her career headlined by the Group Three James HB Carr Stakes. She earned almost $600,000 during her racing days.

"It's a really good avenue to be involved with," Triple Crown Syndication's Chris Ward said. "We've had Peggy Jean who's come through the Magic Millions Sales for $1 million at the end of her career and we had Secret Trail a few years ago (sell) for $700,000."

"As you can see if you take the right approach the results are there and Magic Millions do a great job in getting all the prospective buyers here on the ground so well - we're more than happy to keep coming back here."

"She's been an outstanding story and it's great for our syndicate of owners," Ward said of Moss Trip.

"She was a filly we picked up for about $32,000 back in the day and she had a great career winning over half a million in prizemoney and now to come to the Magic Millions sale ring and cap it all off with a huge sale of $900,000 - as you can imagine we've got some pretty excited owners."

Three other mares today sold for three quarters of a million dollars - Lady Sharapova (to Bangaloe Stud) while Kia Ora Stud purchased both Moqueen and Sweet Sister.

The Written Tycoon Syndicate is the leading buyer at the sale to date with a spend of over $15.2 million on 36 lots. Rosemont Stud has secured 16 lots for over $10.5 million.

With two days of the sale completed the sale gross has soared to over $98.5 million from 394 lots sold at an average price of over $250,000. The clearance rate sits at 88 per cent.

"We set a huge benchmark yesterday but it was a good, solid day's trade with good momentum through the day and that flowed right to the last lot," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"To hold a $250,000 average and a clearance rate of 88 per cent and a gross ticking towards $100 million is sensational. I couldn't be happier."

"There was value to be found if people kept their lists long and did their work. I am sure there will be people going home tonight and growing their lists for tomorrow."

"We have an exceptional lot of mares to go under the hammer on Day Three and I expect more strong bidding," Bowditch added.
