Randwick jockeys’ review for Saturday

Tom Baddock - Saturday September 16

Jockey Brenton Avdulla has sounded an ominous warning to rivals in The Everest after Chautauqua broke 11 seconds in each of the last four furlongs in the Group II The Shorts at Randwick on Saturday.

Winning the Heritage Stakes aboard Viridine was not the only time Brenton Avdulla was smiling at Randwick on Saturday. Photo: Steve Hart

Chautauqua ran his last 600m in 32.04 seconds.

Once again, Racenet was on hand to get the feedback from every rider after every race.

This is what the jockeys thought of their rides during the day.

LARLABROOK

Greg Ryan

I thought I actually got beat on the line. I thought they nutted me. I thought the trip might have taken something out of him. He gave me the feel going to barriers he wasn't as bold as he can be. So the experience will help him to no end.

2nd

SHE KNOWS

Jay Ford

She ran well. Gee I thought I got the bob in on the line. Other than that she's a nice little horse.

3rd

UNDAOAF

Lee Magorrian (a3)

Strong effort.

4th

OAKFIELD TIME

Hugh Bowman

It was an honest effort. I should have held the lead, she just switched off when I took a sit because she has always led.

5th

MR BONJOVE

Andrew Adkins (a1.5)

Good run. Wasn't beaten far. Stepping up in distance next start he'll be spot on.

6th

MALACHI CRUNCH

Didn't stretch out.

Good run but the slow start costly.

That was good, comfortable in the lead there. I just increased from the 600m home and just went through his gears. It was just easy really.

2nd

DARCI'S AFFAIR (NZ)

Rachel King (a1.5)

Really good run, just probably just could have done with being a pair further forward.

3rd

GOLD HORIZON

Corey Brown

He ran up to his best.

4th

REIBY THE RED

Jay Ford

He was good. He was off the bridle early but rallied late, probably just looking to step up to 2000m.

5th

ROYAL NAVY

Tim Clark

Got back and couldn't get him into the race, couldn't get him interested.

6th

VELADERO

Glyn Schofield

Just a bit flat today. Obviously it was a pretty hot tempo today, nowhere for him to settle down and get comfortable, he didn't get home.

7th

PRADA MISS

Andrew Adkins (a1.5)

A little disappointing. Sat outside the winner, just didn't fire today.

8th

Disappointing.

VIRIDINE

Brenton Avdulla

He jumped well and I just rode him negative early because he can switch on in his races a bit and he was over doing it for the first furlong and a half. It took me a while to get him to come back and settle but once he did he dropped his head and travelled like a horse that was going to be hard to beat. I was able to slide up three deep when Tye had nowhere to go and put the race away at the furlong.

2nd

SINGLE BULLET

Tye Angland

Great run but just had no luck in running.

3rd

Really good effort. I've been desperate to ride him quiet and that's why.

He's just still very soft.

8th

GOODFELLA

Didn't have the speed to lead and had a bit of interference mid-race which didn't help but ran through the line.

COMIN' THROUGH

Michael Walker

He is a very good horse, he is the reason I got down to 53kg to make it today. He let the leader come back and head him, he eyeballed it, found the horses on the outside and kicked again. Hats off to Chris (Waller) he just placed this horse so well he thought he would leave three weeks between runs and that has probably won him the race, bring on the Epsom.

2nd

TOM MELBOURNE (IRE)

Blake Shinn

Very gallant effort, take nothing away from the winner, though having to concede 4kg was probably the telling factor. Full credit to my horse.

3rd

BURNING PASSION

Tim Clark

He had a lovely run on-speed, he controlled it well, horse is going as good as ever, would appreciate a little bit of rain about.

4th

PAJARO (NZ)

Andrew Adkins (a0)

Great run coming off the back of a nice tempo, he hit the line strong and will be better second up.

5th

NO DOUBT

Jeff Penza

When the tempo backed off he just wanted to over-race a little bit, it turned into a little bit of sprint for him at the end, he still whacked away pretty well

6th

NEW TIPPERARY

Brenton Avdulla

He's a quirky horse when he doesn't want to go, he doesn't want to go, which was sort of mid-race today. I was happy with his last 400m, I think he is in for a good preparation. If Joe [Pride] finds the right race for him next time over a mile he'll be hard to beat.

7th

HAVANA COOLER (IRE)

Glyn Schofield

They just ran him off his feet.

ALIZEE

Glyn Schofield

Everyone has been waiting for her to show up and run well and she has been able to do that today, she certainly showed her best. There was a bit of 'argy bargy' at the start but I think the likely leader wasn't flash away so the race took a different complexion.

We had a plan where we wanted to be around midfield with cover and we know that she can reel off a strong sectional we got up the rise and I asked her for an effort and she was electric.

2nd

CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES

Tye Angland

No excuses today, jumped well and got into a good spot, thought I had it won when I let go, the winner was just in behind us and was too strong late.

3rd

CELLARGIRL

Michael Walker

Really good run, she's quite deceiving, she was gone at the top of the straight when she got pushed out on the corner, but as soon as I put the stick behind her she took off, really really good run.

4th

TULIP

Hugh Bowman

She was inclined to over-race a little bit in the early to mid-stages, which cost her late.

5th

ONE MORE HONEY

Blake Shinn

Good run, she's looking for a mile now and is not without a chance in the Flight Stakes.

6th

SWEET DEAL

Jason Collett

Good performance today, was a touch slow to begin and did a bit of work outside the lead, I thought her effort was good.

7th

I AM EXCITED

Corey Brown

No luck again, she was forced to cover ground from the awkward sort of barrier, hard to say whether she got the seven furlongs because she just covered too much ground.

8th

SMOOTH LANDING

Tim Clark

Bit of a non-event really, they trot and cantered and sprinted home. They struggled to make any ground from the back.

9th

PANDEMONIUM

Joshua Parr

Reared just as the gates opened and our chances were lost at the start.

10th

ACQUME

Christian Reith

Ran well, probably just going up in trip she travelled a little bit too well in the run, back in trip she'll redeem herself.

WINX

Hugh Bowman

She has done it again, she is such a delight to be a part of and I have really run out of things to say, she is such a magical horse and she just never fails to get the job done. Today I expected to be closer to the speed, the pace was strong, at the top of the straight she had a lot of ground to make up and after her last two performances I knew she could do it, I am just so proud of her.

2nd

HAPPY CLAPPER

Blake Shinn

Gallant effort, he travelled really well, I think he knew Winx was in that race today, he gave something a bit extra than he has done before. At the half mile I felt like the winner, the 400m he felt the winner. It's very humbling to run second to her [Winx], she's the people's champ. Full credit to my horse and Pat Webster, he was very brave today.

3rd

FOXPLAY

Brenton Avdulla

She's terrific, probably almost the best mare in the country because I don't call Winx a mare, she's a freak.

4th

MCCREERY (GB)

Michael Walker

Really good run, just rode him quiet and he hit the line very strong, bit of cut in the track and over further, he'll be hard to beat next time.

5th

MACKINTOSH (NZ)

Glyn Schofield

He ran well, he was up on the speed and whacked away. Little bit of cut in the ground would suit him.

6th

HEAVENS ABOVE

Tye Angland

She went well, they just went too quick for her in the middle stages. It got me off the bit a long way from home, to get her to perform at her best she has to travel up and only get off the bridle in the last 300m. I was off the bit next to Winx at the half-mile, I was concerned for her actually, but I thought my girl stuck on well.

7th

RED EXCITEMENT

Joshua Parr

I was under pressure a long way from home today, unsure the reasons why.

8th

ECUADOR (NZ)

Adam Hyeronimus

He raced very one-paced today, so we'll just wait and see how he pulls up because he is a lot better than that.

REDZEL

Hugh Bowman

When they (connections of Ball Of Muscle) announced they were hell bent on leading at least we knew what the plan was, I would have been happy to lead but I didn't want to lead at a pace that I was being pressured at.

The funny thing was when he did set up the lead, Glyn Schofield on Ball Of Muscle he wasn't going fast enough for me so I poured the pressure on him from the 650m.

2nd

BALL OF MUSCLE

Glyn Schofield

Pleasing return, showed a lot of fight today.

3rd

NIETA

Corey Brown

Ran really well, if there had of been a bit more cut in the track she definitely runs a clear second, she was a bit reluctant to switch her lead leg on the firm surface.

4th

ENGLISH

Blake Shinn

I thought she ran really well, the first 100m they didn't go as quick as I would have liked and I drew awkwardly. I had to go forward and it probably told a bit late after I got caught wide. She'll take good improvement from the run and expect a good run next start.

5th

TAKEDOWN

Tim Clark

He obviously didn't come up last preparation, but that return was much more pleasing. Probably looking for 1400m now he's a bit older.

6th

FELL SWOOP

Tye Angland

I thought he went well, he had a good run throughout, I think he'll improve a lot of that. He pulled up and had a good blow but he cleared his wind pretty quick, nice horse.

7th

CHAUTAUQUA

Brenton Avdulla

Terrific, obviously a month until the grand final, couldn't be happier. If it was 1200m today he probably runs over the top of them.

8th

AFTER ALL THAT

Jason Collett

Not a bad return from my horse, up a lot in grade today but I felt he ran alright.

9th

ECKSTEIN

Andrew Adkins (a0)

Great run, she's in great form she needed that run to settle her nerves a little bit, going forward she's in great condition, she does need that little bit further.

LIBRAN (IRE)

Glyn Schofield

He really hit the line strongly in his first up run for me and today we just rode him a similar fashion, let him be comfortable and didn't he let down well.He took a very narrow split and once he got his nose through he dashed really strongly for me.

2nd

ANTONIO GIUSEPPE (NZ)

Tye Angland

He went super, ended up getting into a good spot off an awkward gate, was forced to make a long sustained run which didn't suit him 100%, I thought he was the winner, but the other horse (Libran) was just too good.

3rd

LIFE LESS ORDINARY (IRE)

Brenton Avdulla

He travelled really comfortably, I thought I was the winner on the corner, little bit disappointed that he ran third, I thought he was probably entitled to go on and win the race.

4th

WHO SHOT THEBARMAN (NZ)

Christian Reith

Really good run, got left a little bit flat-footed on the firm surface but found the line very well late.

5th

CLASSIC UNIFORM

Tim Clark

Another top effort, he's crying out for a bit of give in the track. Didn't help getting taken on at the 700m.

6th

ALLERGIC

Joshua Parr

He's in fantastic order.

7th

CHOCANTE (NZ)

Blake Shinn

He was disappointing, he travelled well, got rolling before the bend and he didn't really find much. Might be looking for some give in the ground.

8th

DEE I CEE (NZ)

Rachel King (a0)

Not a bad run, probably just went a bit too slow for him early.

9th

MEGABLAST (NZ)

Jason Collett

Nice run early, but when the tempo increased he came off the bridle and he didn't have anything to give.

10th

KINEMA (IRE)

Michael Walker

Feeling the track a bit, needs a bit of rain.

11th

HARPER'S CHOICE

10th

MISSILE CODA

Andrew Adkins (a1.5)

She was a lot better today, beautiful in the gates. Didn't bounce that well but mustered speed quick. I was able to sit outside the leaders. Just lacked in confidence when the horse came up on my outside. She'll come on from that but wants a bit further too.

11th

ZIGGY WILLIE

Tye Angland

He raced well. He carried a big weight first-up, performed good.

12th

ECHO EFFECT

Brenton Avdulla

They want him to settle this time in so I think they are going to have to sacrifice a few runs. I thought his run was better than it will read on paper. They went slow and dashed.
