Profitable Broodmares Not Confined to Top of Market

Tara Madgwick - Friday May 7

There is always tremendous interest surrounding the broodmares that sell for big money and make all the headlines following a sale, but looking a little further down the list can highlight some lesser told success stories such as we saw on Thursday when a $65,000 mare produced the $400,000 Capitalist colt that topped the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale.

Laylia is the $65,000 mare that produced the $400,000 Capitalist colt that topped the Inglis Weanling Sale on Thursday.

The tale of Victorian breeder David Digney and his purchase of Laylia for $65,000 from the Newgate Consignment at the 2020 Inglis Broodmare Sale has been well covered, read about it here, but it’s not an isolated example of a modestly priced mare recouping costs and then some.

At the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale, Tasmanian based Grenville Stud purchased three time winning More Than Ready (USA) mare Bousquet for $40,000 from the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft in foal to Deep Field.

$550,000 Deep Field colt from Bousquet sold by Grenville Stud.

The result of that mating was a colt that they sold at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale this year for $550,000 to the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Bousquet is now in foal to Grenville Stud’s young Snitzel stallion Stratosphere.

At the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale, Victorian based Diamond Park Breeding and Racing bought stakes-winning General Nediym mare Siennas Fury for $30,000 from the Glenarvon Park draft in foal to Winning Rupert.

The result of that mating was a filly that they sold at Inglis Premier this year for $210,000 to Dalziel Bloodstock / Peter Moody Racing.

Siennas Fury had a colt by Magnus last spring and is in foal to Alabama Express.

At the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale, Hong Kong investor Ben Kwok bought winning More Than Ready (USA) mare All Day Baby for $28,000 from the Macquarie Stud draft in foal to All Too Hard.

She was exported to New Zealand and the result of that mating, a colt was sold at Karaka Book 1 for $190,000 to David Ellis.

All Day Baby had a filly by Vanbrugh last spring and is in foal to Rageese.

At the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale, WA based Two Fillies Farm purchased imported Danehill Dancer mare Port Elizabeth (IRE) for $27,000 in foal to Churchill (IRE).

The result of that mating was a colt that was sold at Inglis Classic for $160,000 to F Cook / John Foote Bloodstock.

Port Elizabeth is now in foal to Toronado (IRE).

At the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale, Queensland based Harry McAlpine Bloodstock bought Lonhro mare Exultation for just $16,000 in foal to Press Statement.

The result of that mating was a filly that was sold this year by Eureka Stud at Inglis Classic Highway Session for $120,000 to Ellersie Lodge / B Heys.

Exultation has a weanling colt by Sidestep and is in foal to Spirit of Boom.

The 2021 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale is on this Sunday at Riverside Stables.
