The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Broadside kept up a relentless down the long Broadmeadow straight to earn a career highlight victory in Friday's $175,000 Group III Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m).
Sent off a $16 chance under Tim Clark following a last of eight behind Dee I Cee in the Listed Premiers Cup (1900m) at Rosehill on August 26 when making his seasonal debut, Broadside led all the way to defeat Auvray (FR) (Le Havre) by a neck with Admiral Jello (Fastnet Rock) a further one and a half lengths back in third. "Full credit to the horse, he's bounced back after a tough run," Bott said.
"To produce a run like that second-up takes a tough horse.
"We were disappointed (last start) but he had legitimate excuses being first-up over 1900
"Today we got a nice draw and after jumping away cleanly Tim was able to rate him to suit.
"This is a race we like to target - he'll head to the Metropolitan next and he's in some of the feature races in Melbourne."
Celebrating his first stakes win, the former New Zealander was a model of consistency last season.
His overall record advances to 6 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds from 13
A brother to the lightly raced winner Constant Barrage, Broadside is the second foal of the Straight Strike mare Anam Cara but you need to go back five generations to find the most recent stakes winner.
Anam Cara was not served in 2014 and missed in 2015. She was covered by Pentire (GB) last spring.
Broadside becomes the third stakes winner for White Robe Stud's royally-bred Sadler's Wells stallion Raise The Flag who is out of the wonder broodmare Hasili.
Raise The Flag stands the 2017 season at a fee of $4,000 +GST.
