The Race for Champion Sire Honours Heats Up

Mark Smith - Sunday April 18

Following the win of Finance Tycoon in the $1million Showdown at Caulfield on Saturday the battle for Champion Sire has heated up as Arrowfield Stud’s recruit Written Tycoon moves within $50,000 of the Arrowfield pensioned stalwart Not A Single Doubt.

The honour for the leading sire of stakes-winners is another highlight heading towards the back end of the season.

I Am Invincible and Written Tycoon have 12 apiece but breathing down their necks are So You Think and Zoustar on 11, Fastnet Rock on 10, Snitzel on 9 and Not A Single Doubt on 8.

The race for Champion First Season Sire is currently also the race for Champion 2yo Sire, with Newgate Farm’s Extreme Choice and Capitalist leading the way.

The chances of Darley Stud’s Street Boss (USA) claiming the 2yo title suffered a setback during the week when Godolphin announced that Anamoe, the runway winner of the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, will be sent to the paddock and not contest next Saturday’s Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes.

Better Than Ready has a great strike rate with his two-year-olds and he leads the way for number of individual 2yo winners with 12 from 27 starters, one ahead of I Am Invincible who has 11 winners from his 34 starters.

For those that have had a punt on the leading first season sire for number of individual winners, the hot favourite Capitalist leads the way on 8, two ahead of Sooboog and Star Turn on 6, with Shalaa (IRE), Flying Artie, Frosted (USA), and Maurice (JPN) on 5 and Astern on 4.

The 5 winners by Frosted (USA) is notable as he has had just 9 starts to date with two of the 5 being stakes-winners.
