Stakes Weekend Continues for Dawn Approach

Tara Madgwick - Sunday April 11

Epsom Derby winner New Approach and his sire son Dawn Approach both featured at Randwick on the first day of The Championships, the former siring Cascadian to win the Doncaster, while the latter sired Paulele to win the Group III Kindergarten and he followed up to sire a promising three year-old stakes-winner at Leopardstown overnight.

A homebred for legendary breeder and trainer Jim Bolger, Dawn Approach colt Poetic Flare won the Listed 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (7f) by a length and a half.

It was his third win from four starts following a successful juvenile season that saw him win the Group III Killavullan Stakes.

“He could go anywhere, we are undecided yet as to which 2000 Guineas he will go for. He hasn't been away at all his year and we were always confident he will handle the ground,” said assistant trainer, Una Manning.

Both his sire Dawn Approach and grand-sire New Approach were trained by Bolger, who has also enjoyed success with Poetic Flare’s three-quarter sister Glamorous Approach, a Group placed multiple stakes-winner by New Approach.

Poetic Flare is the best of four winners from Rock of Gibraltar mare  Maria Lee, who comes from the family of another Bolger bred and trained champion Teofilo.

Dawn Approach shuttled to Darley Australia for the last time in 2018 and his last crop of 23 Australian foals are yearlings.

DAwn Approach shuttled to Darley Australia for five seasons.
