Arqana Purchase Super Haze a Rosemont Stud Winner
Breednet - Media Release - Monday, 10 July 2017
A €62,000 (approxA$72,880) foal purchase at the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale back in 2012 is turning into a properly exciting stayer for Rosemont Stud and partners after taking the Banjo Paterson Series Final at Flemington last Saturday, his fifth victory Down Under.

Super HazeSUPER HAZE (image Steve Hart) was picked up by agent Louis Le Métayer's Astute Bloodstock on behalf of Anthony Mithen's operation from the draft of Haras d'Etreham. Etreham has been operated for three generations by the Chambure family and has many connections with Australia, with current head Nicolas having spent time at Lindsay Park Stud and still a regular face at breeding stock sales, and Scissor Kick having just completed its first Northern Hemisphere season on the farm's roster.

Super Haze is by the sadly missed High Chaparral from a family that has sprung Stakes winners worldwide. His second dam is the highly talented SILVERSKAYA, winner of the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont in France and dam of SEVILLE, a Classic place-getter for Aidan O'Brien who spent the later part of his career with Robert Hickmott, winning the Gr.1 Metropolitan and filling the runner-up spot in the Gr.1 Turnbull Stakes. Under the third dam appears Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase 2ndSIX SENSE.

Anthony Mithen has been a long time supporter of French racing and a regular buyer at the ARQANA Breeding Stock sale. He attended the 2016 renewal and purchased several mares that have been sent to New Zealand to be mated with Westbury Stud's Gr.1- winning son of Tavistock, Tarzino.

Super Haze showed ability from an early stage, to the extent that in December 2015, Anthony Mithen was back in Deauville and purchased his dam Silver Haze, who was in foal to champion French sire Le Havre, for only €40,000 through Belmont Bloodstock. A filly was born in April 2016, who is now a very valuable commodity.

The gelding made his debut for trainer Tony McEvoy as a Norther Hemisphere four-year-old and graduated at second asking in a Ballarat maiden plate over 1400m. He followed up with three placed efforts over trips stretching up to 2400m, hinting at his staying potential. His 2016-17 campaign delivered four wins from 12 starts, culminating in a dominating display in the Banjo Paterson Series Final.

"This is a horse we thought a fair bit of ," McEvoy told Racing and Sport. He said he felt the gelding was unlucky not to win the 2800m race on the Melbourne Cup day undercard at Flemington last spring. "Then he sort of lost his way a little bit and his form in Adelaide has been OK, But that was his true form today. He loves Flemington, loves a bit of galloping room, and Luke was superb on him. He was really patient and smooth ."
