Newmarket Group Three Winner for Starspangledbanner
Mark Smith - Sunday, 2 July 2017

Home Of The Brave has been a wonderfully consistent performer for Starspangledbanner since breaking his maiden at Newmarket back in July 2014.

Purchased for 80,000 euros by Troy Corstens and Justin Bahen at the 2013 Arqana Deauville yearling sale, Home Of The Brave originally raced for a syndicate that included Australians David Moodie, Ash Hardwick, Michael Ramsden, Peter Raff and Frank Cotela.

Now sporting the royal blue of Godolphin, Home Of The Brave made it two out of two in 2017 when he captured Saturday's Group III Criterion Stakes at Newmarket.

Sent off the 13/8 favourite under James Doyle, Home Of The Brave sat up on the speed set by Ibn Malik, then took control inside the final 200 metres to defeat fellow Godolphin-owned Jungle Cat by three-quarters of a length with Last year's winner Breton Rock in third.

The Hugo Palmer trained 5yo was coming off a Listed win at Leicester at his 2017 bow.

"You can never expect anything but it was as we hoped for, Palmer told Sporting Life.

"My heart sank when I saw the 70 millimetres of rain fall midweek but it is amazing what racecourse Newmarket is as it took the rain that well.

"He has been a pretty consistent horse all his life especially in the early part of the season.

"He trains on his own and never works with another horse. James Doyle has ridden him almost every time and he understands him.

"I think we will give him a short break and head for the Lennox (at Goodwood) as that is the obvious race.

"Things haven't gone the way we might have dreamed they would in the first couple of months of the season, but that's two Group races today and that's always going to be a good tally."

Home Of The Brave is the better of two winners out of the Beat Hollow mare Blissful Beat who is a half-sister to another Criterion Stakes winner Suggestive (Reprimand) as well as the Group III Prix de Conde winner Rashbag (Reprimand)

Blissful Beat has a yearling filly by Arrowfield shuttler Olympic Glory (Choisir).

A 4-time Group I winning son of Choisir, Starspangledbanner's fee at Coolmore Stud in 2017 has been set at $16,500.
