More Million Dollar Mares at Gold Coast

Media Release - Thursday June 1
Mares in foal to leading sire and former Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate Snitzel have starred on Day Two of the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

The champion Arrowfield Stud based stallion was the covering sire of both lots to sells for over $1 million on another outstanding day's selling at the Southern Hemisphere's number one breeding stock auction.

Group One winner and proven stakes producer The Party Stand (Lot 941) rounded out the day as the top seller when she was knocked down to Adrian Nicoll of BBA Ireland for $1.1 million.

The daughter of Thorn Park, a winner of the New Zealand Stakes at Group One level, is the dam of the exciting Melbourne filly Petition, a member of the Freedman stable who was purchased as a yearling by Nicoll.

"She was the one we wanted all week," a delighted Nicoll said. "She's a beautiful mare and she's in foal to the right horse."

"I bought Petition as a yearling so I know quite a lot about what she can produce."

"Petition was a $560,000 yearling, quite an expensive filly by Foxwedge and she's been very unlucky – she should have won a stakes (race) by now and she will definitely win a stakes or group race next year."

"She's a Group One winner herself and she's the mare we wanted," Nicoll summed up.

Coolmore's Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (USA) is the likely partner for The Party Stand this spring.

The Party Stand was offered  by Segenhoe Stud Australia on behalf of the Camilleri family's Fairway Thoroughbreds – the breeder of the world's highest rated turf horse Winx.

The other mare in foal to Snitzel to star on Day Two was Comprende, a group three performed Adelaide winner, who sold to Widden Stud in partnership with David Lucas for $1.05 million.

Widden's Antony Thompson couldn't hide his delight in securing the good looking daughter of I Am Invincible.

"We're thrilled to have her," Thompson said. "She's a queen. Physically she's beautiful."

"She was a very high priced yearling when she sold. At that stage I Am Invincible hadn't emerged so her price was mostly on type."

"She was our number one physical pick of the sale and we're thrilled to have her," Thompson added.

Comprende was presented by Willow Park Stud on behalf of owner, well known businessman Rod Menzies and he was not surprisingly ecstatic with today's result.

"I was amazed with the opening bid of $700,000 and then $800,000," Menzies said. "That indicated to me that any concerns I had with a reserve were not to be a worry."

Leading New Zealand based bloodstock agent Dean Hawthorne was thrilled to snap up the day's third top seller, proven Group One producer Breccia for $950,000.

BrecciaPresented by Bell View Park Stud the winning Fastnet Rock mare is the dam of recent Group One All Aged Stakes winner Tivaci.

A three quarter sister to Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder, Breccia was presented in foal to exciting young Darley stallion Brazen Beau.

"Her first foal is a Group One winner and a fast horse," Hawthorne explained. "She's a quality mare – a beautiful mare."

"The reports on the other foals coming along behind are good."

"It's been so strong this week and a number of mares have sold for around this price and they are unproven – whereas this mare's first foal is the Group One winner who's now gone to stud in New Zealand and he will get very well supported over there."

"I'm pretty happy to get her," he added. "I didn't think we would to be fair."

All the key indicators from the National Broodmare Sale are well above last year's successful auction. The average price has grown from $138,929 to $159,761 – the clearance rate is up, while the gross has soared 50 per cent.

"Two days in and we're sitting at a gross just over $78 million which is very, very good," Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.

"Last year we closed out (day two) at $51 million. In fact we're in front of the overall total of the three days last year already."

"We've still got a full day of selling (for Book One) which is great. The market is holding strong and the clearance rate is about 86 per cent and with the big numbers we're selling everything is holding up."

The China Horse Club is currently the leading buyer on total spend – with $5.135 million outlaid on 11 lots at an average price of $466,818.

Day Three of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale commences at 10am (Qld time) on Thursday.
